The County Auditor, Few people who do not actively come in touch with the county audi- tor’s office realize the importance' of this office and the wide range of in- fluence which it has. An auditor who is unwilling to work himself, who is lax in his office discipline, or who holds the office for what there is in it with no thought of the public ser- vice he has sworn to perform, can | soon put the records in such a shape that it will take many months of hard work to straighten them out. James L. George has been the au- ditor of Beltrami county for two years. From the evidence of such men as Public Examiner Fritz, his deputy, Colonel Johnson, and local men who constantly have business with the au- ditor, it appears that when Mr. George assumed the duties of the of- fice the records were far I}ehind, some as much as eight years. At the present time, the records have been brought down to date and should an- other man assume the office January 1,1913, he will find the books in first today. Thomas E. Added to this technical education, he has had many years of experience in business life so that he brings'to the office the abilities of a well trained business man. He is not only competent to see that the routine of his office is cared for promptly, but is in"a position, to give valuable advice to the county commissioners, board of equalization and board of audit. He is the first real § auditor the county has had and the tax payers cannot afford to let him get away.” These two men have more Jto do with county officials than any other two in the state and their opin- ions should count. In the two years he has been in of- fice, Mr. George has saved the county enough money by proper buying of supplies to more than pay for the ex- tra clerk hire needed to care for the increased business and to bring the books'up to date. He has worked hard himself, not leaving everything to his clerks. the discharge of his duties. | The duties of an office such as the county auditor’s cannot be learned in one year nor in two. The details are S0 numerous that it takes many | months before one man can master 1 them. To break in a new man costs the county just as much as it does a business firm to break in new clerks. ‘When a man is found who is capable, willing to work, and who for two years has conducted the office in a first class manner it is not good busi- ness for the county to change. James L. George is a good auditor. He should be re-elected. His career in the diplomatic service covers a per- . iod of more than thirty-five years and has confined ' wholly to the far East. He began as a student interpreter in China in 1876 and became successive- ly the assistant secretary and secre- tary of the British legation at Pekin, consul-general in Corea and minister resident at Seoul. With the Japan- ese occupation of Corea he returned to Pekin to become the British min- ister there, a position which he still holds. 3 Congratulations to: Rt. Rev. Chauncey B.
