Nothing makes for good fellowship between communities better than Jjunkets of citizens from one place to the other. Such an one was taken by the Crookston Automobile club to Be- midji yesterday and until noon today, when they left, the tourists were the guests of the entire city. The Pioneer believes that every movement which will result in a bet- ter cementing of the cities of North- ern Minnesota should be encouraged. The informal smokers held by the Commergial club last winter at which times similar bodies from neighbor- ing towns were guests r(;sulted in a much closer community feeling be- tween those men and the citizens of Bemidji. The tour of the Crookston club to Bemidji cannot but result in a better relationship and an increas- ed good fellowship between the city in the woods and the city in the val- ley. ‘What is true of Crookston can- be made true of other cities. With the fall touring season coming with its cool weather and good roads, owners of autos should get together and plan a short trip that would take them and the progressive spirit of Bemidji into the home cities of our neighbors. If an auto tour is not practical, a junket of the Commercial club to Crookston, Blackduck or In- ternational Falls is practical and one or the other should be taken up and pushed through. Good fellowship means better and easier service which is the aim of all truly great men. Big Task Before It. St. Paul Dispatch: Senator Clapp has the opportunity of a life time, The senate has clothed with extraor- dinary authority the committee of which he is the chairman, and in- structed it to go to the bottom of the financing of all recent president candidacies and campaigns. Much will depend upon the energy and strength of purpose of the chairman in such a proceeding. The investi- gation may be searching or perfunc- tory in the proportion that its chair- man director is zealous and deter- mined or inert and easy-going. Sena- tor Clapp is in position to do the people and clean politics an ines- timable service and will need no ex- horation, in all probability, to do his ‘whole duty in the preemises. The American people are entitled to know from what sources and why come the enormous sums nedesasry to candidacies and campaigns, yet they do not know. The whole truth has not yet been told. The sugegstion of improper and unwholesome interest clings to every candidacy, without a single exception. It is the curernt be- lief that in behalf of every candidate for the presidential nomination, on all sides, a large sum of money was raised. Who contributed and what ‘was the motive back of the contribu- tion? That is what the people want to know. Preliminary expenses are tremend- ous and the money may come from wholly proper sources and with en- tirely legitimate purposes, but if so no harm can be done in disclosing both source and motive. The La Fol- lette organization, which cut such a swath until the advent of Roosevelt, must have entailed considerable ex- pense in carrying the Wisconsin statesman and his entourage by spec- jal train flying over the country, and it is not reasonable to suppose the senator’s private purse would stand such a drain, Perhaps he would be the last to object to disclosing the assistance. Every candidate, whether successful or defeated, especially if he already held office under the general govern- ment, should be required to open his campaign books and show the finan- cial influences behind his candidacy, There is interest to the public in knowing why the success of any can- didate is desired to the extent of fin-|sey. 1728_Gen. Few believe that Archbold has made a clean breast of the operations of the Standard Oil Company, and it is important to know, from the books, of the large transactions admitted and unadmitted. To what account was charged the sum deposited to the credit of Penrose, the receipt~of which is not denied by that virtuous statesman? It is a big job that faces Senator Clapp’s committee, and an import- ant one. It must be discharged with- out fear or favor. Candidacies may be made or marred, but the task of the committee is to go straight to the bottom and spare none. Senator is fortunate in having this unusual op- portunity of rendering the country an inestimable service. THIS DATE IN HISTORY.
