Camp No. 34 HUNTERVTELLS “TRUE” STORY Full and Particular Account of an Af- fair in Which He and a Bear Figured. “T had proceeded in this way a few steps, when suddenly I saw, about eight feet away on the curving border of the spruces, rumnning directly at me what appeared to be a large bear. I had just time to push forward the butt of my rifie and yell, when the bear collided with me, knocking me down. It seemed to turn slightly to the left as I pushed my rifle into it, and I clearly recall its shoulder strik- ing my left hip, its head striking just above my left knee, while its claws struck my shin so that it {8 now black and blue. I had the sensation of one about to be mauled and mutilated. As I fell to the right my rifie dropped, and in my confusion, I grabbed with my left hand the animal's fur, while I remember having a quick, foolish thought of the small knife in my pocket. “The bear was, I belleve, more sur- prised than I. I felt its fur slip through my hand, as it quickly turned to its right, and, swinging about, ran back over the hill without any at- tempt to bite or strike me. Rising, as the bear wheeled, I picked up my rifie and shot as the animal was dis- appearing. The bullet struck it, evi- dently high in the back. Immediate- 1y I took up its trail, followed it down into the woods and on the flats for over an hour, and at last lost the im- pressions on hard ground, Its tracks showed that it had kept running for more than a mile, and then settled down to a walk on the timbered ridges, continuing to a flat country be- low. ¥or the first mile T saw, &t Tn- tervals, considerable blood on the leaves of brush and trunks of trees ahout three feet up from the ground, ‘but afterward saw no more. “Who will belleve this remarkable incident? Certainly if another had re- lated it to me, I might have thought 1t some mistake owing to excitement. “Twice I have had the good luck to see the action of a bear when it crossed unexpectedly the fresh trail of a man—once in Mexico, and again last summer on the MacMillan river, ‘when a bear crossed Selous’ trail. In both cases the bear jumped in great fright and ran at full speed.”—Charles Sheldon, in Scribner’s Magazine. NERVE OF NEW YORK WOMAN Remarkable Display of “Cheek” by Mistress of Doggle Who Was Getting an Outing. I think there is a particular brand of “cheek,” otherwise known as “nerve,” among the women of New York, writes an observer. It’s the calm- est, coolest kind, almost unbelievable, it’s s0 egotistic, and so stupid that it's | amusing. Here’s an instance, and I assure you it’s no fairy tale. I was in a big house furnishing establish- ment, and in came a woman with a | little dog. She said she didn’t know |Just what she wanted, but she'd like to go through the shop. They said all right, and a clerk took her round. I followed along. The womian priced a few things, looked casually at others and finally made ready ‘to leave. - “I like your shop very much,” she said, “and I'll come again. It's an out- ing for doggie. Good-by!” “Ati outing for dogslet™ gusped the clerk, starting to foliow ber. “Yes. He's been smelling the var- nish. He simply loves varnish. I | bring him again. €ood-by!" Should she be in jail or In & Junatic asylum? 7 Homesick immigrants, In the steerage office of a European steamship line sat sad-eyed men and ‘women of the steerage type. “America too swift for ‘em, eh?” said & brisk American through. “Going back home, eh?” “Nothing of the kind,” said a clerk. “The poor devils havenm’t been here long enough to find out whether they ‘will be a failure or not. Just at pres- ent they are knocked out by home- sickness. That is why they are here. “The individuals ecomprising this particular group came over alone. They have no friends here and the loneliness has floored them. A visit to the office of the steamship line that brought them over is about the best bracer they can find. “Here they can at least see the pie- ture of the ship they came in, and maybe strike up a conversation with some one who is buying a ticket to go back. They'll hang around here off and on for several weeks until the sharp edge of their homesickness has ‘worn off.” Where the Difficulty Lay. Bouttown—Better not go to thé St. Fashion hotel. Their bill of fare is in French. Cultured Friend (indignant- 1y)—I can understand French. Bout- town—Yes, but the waiters can't, and Deither can the cook—New York Weekly. SAGE TEA WLLL DARKEN THE HAIR Restore Faded and Gzay Hair to Na- tural Color— Dandruff Quickly Removed. There is nothing new about the idea of using Sage for restoring the color of the hair. Our grandmothers kept their hair dark, glossy and abun- dant by the use of a simple “Sage Tea.” Whenever their hair fell out or took on a dull, faded or streaked appearance, they made a brewof Sage leaves, and applied it to their hair with wonderfully beneficial effect. Nowadays we don’t have to resort to the old-time tiresome method of gathering the herbs and making the tea. This is done by skillful chemists better than we could do it ourselves; and all we have to do is to call for the ready made product. Wyeth’s Sage and Sulphur Hair Remedy, con- taining Sage in the proper strength, with the addition of Sulphur, another old-time scalp remedy. Tihs preparation gives youthful color and beautiy to the hair, and is one of the best remedies you can use for dandruff, dry, feverish, itching scalp, and falling hair. Get a fifty cent bottle from your druggist today, and you will be surprised at the quick results. All druggists sell it, under guarantee that the money will be refunded if the remedy is not ex- actly as represented. The $4.00 (Like illustrations in the announcements from day to day..
