Sandstone Courier: The Progres- sives or social center workers won out by a big majority at Duluth last Saturday. Millions of dollars are in- vested in school buildings in this state and it is now becoming the pop- ular opinion that these buildings could be put to good use for more than 1,080 hours of the regular school year, This is a move in the right direction. Good Argument. Preston Times: School matters have engrossed the attention of Du- luth people the past few weeks al- most to the exclusion of the presi- dential fight. The whether the different school houses should be used as social centers where amusements and entertain- ments, including social dances, should It was decided in the affirmative by a tremendous major- question was be allowed. schools, a falc criterlon of how this question can form of government? If such a practice is wrong would not the ma- jority condemn it? For surely you will admit that the majority of the people are honest and conscientious. If this question were submitted to a vote nearly all communities would vote in favor of dancing. THIS IS MY 64th BIRTHDAY. Ben F. Calawell. Ben F. Caldwell, who has been a conspicuous leader in Democratic pol- itics in Illinois for many years, was born in Green county, that state,, Au- | gust 2, 1848. 1In early life he re- moved to Springfield, where he began his public career more than thirty years ago as a member of the county board of supervisors. After serving several terms in each branch of the Tllinois legislature Mr. Caldwell was elected to congress in 1898. He served four terms in congress and voluntarily retired when renomina- tion without opposition was assured. In the Illinois primaries last spring he was a candidate for the Democra- tic nomination for governor, but was defeated by former Mayor Dunne of Chicago. Congratulations to: George P. Are you half sick for two or three er—violent sneezing spells, running corners of the eyes, pain and soreness in the back of the throat, at nights a stuffed-up feeling in the head and an asthmatic wheezing in the throat and chest? If so, you can get almost in- stant relief by simply using a cleans- ing, healing antiseptic cream called Ely’s Cream Balm. Hay Fever is due to an extremely sensitive condition of the membrane lining the nose and throat. Dust, smoke and certain odors irritate this delicate inside skin, it becomes in- flamed, causing a watery discharge from the nose and violent spasms of sneezing. Ely’s Cream Balm will relieve all these distressing symptoms in five minutes’ time. It opens up the air passages, soothes, heals and strength- ens the weakened, ififlamed mem- branes, restores them to healthy, nor- mal condition, so that you are not subject to Hay Fever attacks. They argued that young peo- ple will dance; that. they amusement and that they had better get both under the supervision of parents and teachers rather than in questionable dance halls and other resorts. Even those opposed to dances must admit the force of such an argument. crave Duluth is Progressive. Albert Lea Standard: Duluth cast over 6,000 votes at its school election last week, the stirring issue being whether dancing should be allowed by the students in the building of the public schools. It carired by an overwhelming majority, the candi- date who most strongly favored it receiving the biggest vote. The re- sult is a credit to the intelligence and spirit of beneficent progress that characterizes the people of Duluth and it is an example that other cities, casting aside bigotry, may wisely fol- low. A Suggestion, Stillwater Gazette: By a decisive vote of the people of Duluth, the school board will permit dancing in the school buildings. Naturally it will be the young people who will do the dancing and it will probably only be the round dances, such as’the waltz, two-step, three-step, polka, schottische, etc. To get real danc- ing they should be taught the quad- rilles, lancers, portland fancy, mon- ey musk, ete., that their fathers and mothers and grandparents used to dance. Many of the young people who attend dances have a slight con- ception of what a square dance fs, but the older people know and for a real time, that is the style to dance. Women Were Active. Little Falls Transcript: Duluth has been somewhat agitated and di- vided over the question whether dancing shall be permitted in the public school buildings of that city. This became the issue at the recent school election and the victory went to the side that favored such permis- sion. Over 9,000 ballots were cast as against 3,700 one year ago. The ‘women were very active at the polls and it was largely through the fe- male vote that the victory for social center extension and the widest rea- sonable use of school buildings was achieved. Commends the Women. Hill City News: Duluth Progres- sives won out in the recent school election at that place. The issue wag whether or not to allow dancing in the schools. By an overwhelming vote is was decided that it is right and proper to allow dancing in the schools. There was the heaviest vote ever cast at a school election in Duluth and the issue was hotly -contested by both sides. To the women of Duluth is given the credit of deciding in fa- vor of dancing in the schools and their stand is to be commended as this move will help to alleviate the public dance hall evil in the eity.
