GUNMEN THRONG COURT WHERE “WHITEY” IS HELD. New Eyewitness of Murder Gives Version and Raider’s Chauf- feur Adds to Testimony. Leaving the capture of the two gunfighters accused of killing Her- man Rosenthal who are still at large to the police. Acting District-At- torney Moss took up to-day the task of following the trail of police graft bared by the murdered gambler and made more plain by the confessions of “Jack” Rose and “Bridgie” Webber. Close to a dozen Tenderloin gamblers and employees of gambling houses, the names of whom were furnished to the District-Attorney by Jack Rose, appeared at the Criminal Courts Building to-day carrying subpoenas and worried expressions. These men are supposed to know something about the colléction of graft by Becker and where the graft went after it left Becker's ‘nands. One by one they were questioned by Mr. Moss. He did not wax enthusiastic over the result of his probing, but the presence of the gam- blers in his office shows that he has a line on the situation of which Rosentflal complained. ? The worried expression on the faces of the gamblers was justified by information in their possession. They will be forced to repeat their stories before the Grand Jury. In the cases of some of them the District. Attorney is in possession of positive evidence that they have been giving up money for protection, Perjury charges will be lodged against them if they fail to corroborate this information. NEW EYEWITNESS OF MURDER QUESTIONED. Harry Newbold, proprietor of the Times Square Hotel in Forty- third street, just west of Seventh avenue, said to be an eyewitness of the murder of Rosenthal able to identify the niurderers, was briefly enter- tained by Mr. Moss at the District-Attorney’s office to-day. Neither Mr. Moss nor Mr. Newbold would discuss what information was given by the latter. Otto Aversi, the chauffeur who took Lieut. Becker to his home the night of the Rosenthal murder, was also questioned by Mr. Moss, “Whitey” Lew!s, who was captured last night In the Catskill Mountains and brought to town early to-day, was grraigned before Coroner Feinberg this afternoon, charged with complicity in the murder of Herman Rosenthal, At the request of Mr. Moss the examination of Lewis was adjourned until? next Tuesday afternoon, Lewis walked down from Police Headquarters to the Criminal Courts Building, surrounded by a guard of detectives. The prisoner was hand- cuffed to Detective Cassassa. A big crowd of boys and young men followed the little group down Centre street. The handcuffs were removed from Lewis In court. A short affidavit, signed by Detective James Harvey, was }}submitted to the court, The affidavit charged Lewis with actually firing the bullets that caused the death of Rosenthal. He is the first of the pris oners in the hands of the authorities to be so accused. Lewis had nothing to say in court, It was learned from Deputy Com- missioner Dougherty that very little was got from Lewis while he was in custody at Healquarters. | which might be used as mi The « t importance was attached Seslored to be the actual killers ef] CAN'T NAME RELATIVES FOR ALIBI.
