From the number of hats that are being shied into the gubernatorial ring it would appear that the ring must soon be enlarged from lack of room. The Red Wing Morning Republi- " can of which Tams Bixby is the head has come out with a boom for W! H. Putnam for governor. It appears that Mr. Putnam is a banker and manufacturer and as such is consid- ered to be a representative of the type of business man needed in the chair of the chief executive. From Minneapolis comes the report | B that P. M. Magnussen, instructor in social science and psychology at the |g St. Cloud state normal school, is thinking that his hat would look well in the ring and so may file for gov- ernor on the Democratic ticket. If he does file, Mr. Magnussen will be the second academic candidate that the Democrats will have since Prof. C. M. Andrist, of the University of | Minnesota, has already filed. Many want to be called although but one will be chosen. Anyway, it gets their names before the public— which seems to be all that some of them are afte: Who Are Socialists? Some statistics regarding the re- cent national Socialist party conven- tion at Indianapolis reveal frequent- ly misrepresented and more often misunderstood. Of the nearly three hundred delegates, seventy-five per cent were native-born Americans, the remainder being divided as follows, so far as known: England 12, Ger- many 10, Canada 9, Russia and Fin- land 5 each, Scotland 4, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Ireland 3-each, Holland, Austria and Poland 2 each and Hungary, Wales, Bavaria, Rou- mania, Bohemia, Italy, and Slavonia 1 each. Of the ascer- tained occupations of the men 117 ~ Were mechanics and laborers (min- ers, printers, carpenters, machinists, cigarmakers, etc.), 30 editors and journalists, 21 lawyers, 20 lecturers and agitators, 15 clerks, bookkeepers and salesmen, 11 farmers, 11 teach- ers, 8 physicians and dentists, the re- mainder being divided among mer- chants, ministers, musicians, agents, students, stenographers, contractors, managers and sundry other occupa- tions. Three-fourths held official po- sitions of some kind in the party. The record shows one Congressman, three state representatives, two one alderman and one justice of the beace present. The average age was forty-one and one-half years, the number of members of labor unions 103, and the average length of mem- bership in the party eight years. A significant feature was the large number of women delegates. Of these there were twenty-six, both actually and proportionately more than in any other political party convention held this or any other year.—William Mailly in the August Metropolitan. mayors, THIS DATE IN HISTORY.
