EAROLD J. DANE, Editor. 40 Why Not Bemidji? The Northern Pacific railway haul- ed fifty carloads of gravel into Deer- wood a short time ago and made the town a present of it. The gravel was used on Deerwood streets to cover the mud and make them usable in ‘wet weather. With three railroads run- ning into Bemidji, it ought to be pos- sible to get the gravel to be used in the Nymore road paving free of all cost to the city and so materially les- sen the cost of that improvement. Is Deerwood better than Bemidji? To the Business Men. Few of the business men of the city seem to realize the importance of paving the Nymore road and pav- ing at once. This matter was reach- ed a stage where it has ceased to be a simple question of paving but has come to involve a decision of the state railroad and warehouse com- mission. Some time ago, the citizens of Ny- more had a hearing before the state railroad and warehouse commission at which time they asked that one or three depots be placed in Nymore by the railroads passing through the village. In its decision, the commis- sion said that while it realized the ground for Nymore’s plea, that on ac- count of the short distance to the Be- midji depots, it could not order any built in Nymore, But the commission further stated that its decision was based mainly on the fact that4t had been given to un- derstand that Bemidji would pave the road to its city limits and that if this was not done, the case could be re-opened. The point to be no- ticed is that if the case is re-opened, it will mean the location of depots in Nymore, very little more than a mile from this city, and the consequent loss of trade here to the amount of about $10,000 a year at present. Bemidji cannot afford to lose the Nymore business, Nymore lives large- 1y on Bemidji industry, its men being mainly workers in the mills and railroad yards, and it is not fair to Bemidji that the money earned in its industries should not go to build up delphia.. Macon, who represents the First Arkansas district in the sa- tional house of representatives and is conspicuous among the Democrat- ic leaders of that body, was born in the town of Trenton, Ark.,, July 6, 1859. Mr. Macon is a typical self- made man. Before he was ten years old his parents died and left him without resources. His youth was spent as a farm laborer and the only educatios he received was eked out during a brief term each year at the country school. He supplemented this, however, by diligent study. Be- fore he was twenty-five years old he was elected to the Arkansas legisla- ture. Later he studied law and be- came prosecuting attorney. He was elected to Congress in 1903 and has been four times re-elected. Congratulations to: Princess Victoria, sister of King George, forty-four years old today. It is as bad as that made by 333 33332 33NN 3 the Bemidji man who did not want the down town streets paved because mud roads were more quiet. An ordinance has been introduced into the city council calling for a special election on the question of voting bonds for paving this road. If the ordinance is passed July 15, the election will probably be held July 23. It is to the direct interest of ev- ery business man in Bemidji to im- press the fact upon his councilmen that this ordinance must be passed and the election carried. A special meeting of the Commer- clal club has been called for next Tuesday night. This matter will come before the club again at that time and the meeting should be well at- tended. This is a big problem for Be- midjl. The busisess men do not ap- pear to appreciate its full signifi- cance. The time for action is here ‘now. THIS DATE IN HISTORY.
