No, Editor Wells and the Governor did not clash. ‘The man who edits the Grand Rap- ids Herald-Review is a woman. This was made known by E. C. Kiley at the Northern editors meeting last week. Miss Stanley is now one of the “Boys.” It may have been unkind for the governor to refer to the batchelor of the Northern Minnesota Editorial as- sociation, but the man whose wife had gone to the country is also thank- ful for not having been slighted. A Good Beginning for a New State. The Democratic party in the new state of New Mexico held its first state convention at Clovis, May 14. One of the first things it did was to adopt the following plank in its plat- form: ‘We believe a healthy, vigorous peo- ple to be the greatest asset of a na- tion. We commend the efforts of Senator Owen to secure greater effi- ciency in our national health agen- cies. We believe these public health agencies should be organized into a single national department of public health, and we favor such legislation as will effect this purpose. The Journal of the American Med- ical association says that it would be difficult to imagine a better starting- point for a party in a new state than such a declaration of its belief in the supreme importance of public health, The Democratic party in New Mexico has taken a position that will ulti- mately be that of all intelligent and unselfish citizens. At Grand Rapids. Since 1884 he has been on the United States circuit bench. Judge = Colt contested the last senatorial election in Rhode Island with Henry P. Lip- pitt, who-was elected to succeed Sen- ator Aldrich, and his friends express confidence that he will be the Repub- lican candidate for Semator Wet- more’s seat in the legislative session next winter. Under the leadership of Ki- ley, Lafrenier, Seeley, Bolter and others, nothing was left undone that made for the comfort and pleasure of their guests. We saw the open pit ir- on mines, concentrating works; four cities that need make no apologies, Lake Pokegama, with arms and legs galore, enjoyed auto rides, boat rides, dined with Mr. and Mrs. A. J.
