COLONEL TO LEAD FIGHT Roosevelt to Have Personal Charge of Candidacy for His Nomina- tion for President. TAFT CONFIDENT OF VICTORY Theodore Roosevelt yesterday an- nounced definitely that he would leave at 5:30 p. m. for Chicago, there personally to take charge of his fight for the Republican presidential nom- ination. He arrived at Chicago late this afternoon. Coming into the corridor of the Outlook office in New York city, where an army of newspaper men ‘were waiting, after an hour’s long- distance telephone conversation with lieutenants in Chicago, Colonel Roos- evelt made this announcement: “Gentlemen, I am going to Chicago on the 5:30 train this afternoon. I think it is the Lake Shore.” “There will be no third candidate. All the information T get is that I will be nominated on the first ballot with votes to spare,” stated Presi- dent Taft yesterday. Friends of the president in Wash- ington today said that if he were not nominated he would decidedly op- pose either Senator Cummins or Sen- ator La Follette as compromise can- to these two ‘genators, his friends said, would be Dased largely on their attitude toward the courts and the recall of judges and decisions, Some of the Taft adherents de- clared today that if he were confront- _|ed with the necessity of naming his preference for a compromise candi- date they believed he would turn to some man like Senator Root of New York, or former Vice-president C. W. Fairbanks of Indiana, the latter be- ing his choice for chairman of the committee on resolutions. BASEBALL YESTERDAY. American League. St. Louis 5, New York 7. Detroit 4, Philadelphia 3.
