HAROLD J. DANE, Editor. The Canker. of Injustice. “The supreme injustice of govern- ment in Minnesota is the unequal representation of the people, main- tained in spite of the constitution and public opinion by a corrupt alli- ance between those who profit by it and every selfish and dangerous in- terest that has gotten a foothold in the legislature. The greedy senators from the rot- ten boroughs Qare ready to bargain with any band of conspirators against the public interest, and all these are quick to seize the oppor- tunity. That is the secret of the stubborn resistance the senate has been able to make for so long to the majority of the people and to every department of the government that is responsible to them. The senate itself has ceased to be responsible. By another violation of the constitution, it hes done away with biennial elections. The rotten borough senators have educated sel- fish public opinion in their districts to uphold and profit by injustice. The brewery aggregation of public enemies can give account of a num- ber of districts susceptible to the in- fluence it can command without }imit and every individual or collective public wrong strong enough to get one or more servants or agents into the senate adds its mite to the garri- son of injustice that has held the citadel for so long.-—Minneapolis Tribune, THIS DATE IN RISTORY. But the {Lancet points out that the crust con- tains much-less moisture, and so is gicher in solid constituents. There-is also an increased amount of soluble carbohydrates in the crust, owing to the action of intense heat upon the outside of the loat during baking, and its: flavor s more stimulating to the flow of ‘the digestive juices. Crust and stale bread.are more digestible than the soft interior of a loaf of new bread; because the salivary juices act readily upon the drier breads. Soft new bread is resistant to the saltvary attack, and seldom receives the neces- sary treatment in the mouth. Persons who! prefer the: crust will be glad to know that in this case the more pala. table. food is. also the more digestible. The Slayer of Miaco. One of the most peculiar cases ever brought to the attention of the court of first instance recently came to light in Pangasinan Province. Pedro’Pabaira, with two others, was accused” of ‘the imurder of Bernabe "Laco, and on' being. brought to trial the first pleaded gullty, there being an aggravating circumstance of treach- ery, and-was sentenced to 20 years in Bilibid. Now ‘it comes' to light that the de- ‘ceased was Miaco, an outlaw, who de- serted from the constabulary some time ago, taking with him various arms and accoutrements and who had engaged in outlawry since that time. There-was-a-reward of 500 pesos out for his capture, dead.or alive. The 'question now is, Should the pris- oner serve his ternm for killing a fel- low-citizen, or should-he-be liberated and given a reward for killing an ene- my ' to ‘soclety?—Manila ' Weekly Times.
