THIS IS MY 71st BIRTHDAY. Sir Squire Bancroft. Sir Squire Bancroft, who was until his retirement some years ago, one of the foremost actor managers of the English stage, was born in London, May 14, 1841. The premature death of his father put an end to his dreams of a college education and at an early age he was obliged to seek his own livelihood. His inclination led him to the stage, and he got his first engagement in Birmingham in 1861. He continued in the provinces for several years, and won much ap- plause as an interpreter of Shakes- peare. In 1865 an engagement was offered to him in London by Miss Marie Wilton, the noted actress who later was to become Lady Bancroft. Together the Bancrofts appeared with much success for many seasons, first at the Prince of Wales Theater and later at the Haymarket Theater, both of which were under their man- agement. Sir Squire Bancroft was the second English actor to be hon- ored with a knighthood. Congratulations to: Hall Caine, famous novelist and playwright, fifty years old today. Sir Frederick W. Borden, Canadian statesman, sixty-five years old today. Sir Douglas Fox, one of the world’s most noted engineers, seventy-two years old today. Col. Theodore A. Bingham, former || police commissioner of New York city, fifty-four years old today. Alton B. Parker, Democratic can- didate for president of the United States in 1904, sixty years old today. The Ninth District, Enough La Follette sentiment has been uncovered in the Ninth congres- sional district the past few days to allow of the sending of two delegates to the Chicago convention instructed for the Wisconsin senator. La Follette men will go into the Thief River convention with sixty pledged votes. There are enough men in the Roosevelt column of eighty-six who equally favor La Follette and Roosevelt to swing the convention to the former if they wish to do so. Taft is absolutely out of the running and the eight votes from Red Lake coun- ty will not hold the balance of power in the convention as was expected. Sentiment of the people of the Ninth district is overwhelmingly progressive. In the Beltrami county convention, the La Follette forces were barely outnumbered. In the Polk county convention, the result was the same, yet in each case, the delegates from these counties are be- ing counted for Roosevelt. An even split in these two delegations would mean the instruction of the Chicago delegates for La Follette. Contrary to expectations, few of the delegations to Thief River go in-| structed although it is understood that they will vote progressive. The fight in the convention is expected to be over the delegates to Chicago and| on the basis of La Follette or Roose- velt votes. The delegations will prob- ably vote as units so that Roosevelt will be choice. Now is the iime to get rid of your rheumatism. The physician in nearly all cases of serious illness, makes a chemical an- alysis of the patient’s urine. He knows that unless the kiduneys are ding their work properly, the other organs cannot be brought back to, health and strength. When the kidneys are neglected or abused in any way, serious results are sure to follow. According to health statistics, Bright’s disease which is really an advanced form of kidney trouble, caused nearly ten thousand deaths in 1910, in the state of New York alone. Therefore, it behooves us to pay more attention to the health of these most important organs. An ideal herbal compound that has had remarkable success as a kidney remedy is Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, the great Kidney, Liver and Bladder Remedy. Waelird 8tories Told by Gueats In Early Morning Hours Prove a LIt tle Disconcerting. “Sometimos: the night clerk’s job hag-its drawbacks,” remarked the tall, thin man behind the desk at the hotel. “These weird tales ‘that guests will tell in the still night”—he went on, “they’re one thing-that makes a fellow wish there were more people around. “One night about 2 o'clock, a guest came up to the desk and spent an hour telling me earnestly about the black cat that had been sitting on the foot of his bed. As he talked I noticed the | fellow had a queer look in his eye. “A black cat’s nothing but & black cat, but somehow a fellow doesn't want to hear much about ’em in the middle of the night from a nervous: man with & queer look in his eye. This man said that the cat came in when the walter brought his dinner up to the room. Then the cat took a chalr at the table opposite him, he said, and tucked a napkin under its chin. “‘I agked it if it didn’t want some- thing to eat’ the man added, ‘but it said it didn’t—politest cat I ever saw.’ “Great line of talk, wasn't it? “Then he started in %o direct a lot of men building a skyscrapper there in the lobby. I couldn’t see the isky- scrapper, but he did. He had a force of about 400 men hoisting stone and steel, and he bossed the job.” Advocates Leaves of Soap. A chemical friend of the Sclentifia American suggests that a campaign by started against the common cake of soap. About 50 years ago there way sold a form of soap for travelers, cons sisting of a booklet, about two incheg by four inches, in which small leavex of soap paper saturated with soap were bound. Each leaf contained enough soap for one washing of the hands.. It -is suggested that one might profitably dispense, through a penny: in-the-slot ‘machine, a paper towel in which i8 folded a sheet of soap paper; for convenient use in public lava tories.
