This paper is omitted in order to permit employes of the Pioneer to enjoy the legal holiday following Christmas, and this practice is in keeping with the large evening news- papers throughout the country. The Pioneer extends greetings to its readers and expresses hope that all will enjoy a Merry Christmas. A merry Christmas to all. Yes, that includes ‘'Pussyfoot” Jchuson. 0 Mistletoe or no mistletoe, it is al- ways fair to kiss the cook. Some folks will enjoy the day while others will ipsist on becoming intoxi cated. One Santa Claus collecting from |; the street crowds in Minneapolis called another Santa Claus a “false- whiskered Buttinski” and when the police arrived both looked as if they had just come down the chimney of a soft coal home. HE OBJECTED TO BREVITY. The modern method of writing letters as briefly as possible is generally speaking a tribute to the advanced manner of doing business but that it does not always work out as well as it might is indicated by the following corres- in America, pondence which has been sent to the Chicago Record-Herald by L. M. Powell of Negaunee, Mich. Mr. Powell found the letters among some papers of the late Peter White of Marquette: “Dear Sir: I heres you was puttin up a new sawmill, soI thought I would drop a line to see if you want- ed a shingle sawyer. - I guess I'can saw as many shingles as the next man. I have been sawing for four year. If you want me please let me know and when you will start. I shall come as soon as you want me. Write soon and let me know what you think aboutit. . < o . Yours very truly, KatahdinPulp & Paper Co”. At which Peter writes back: “Dear Sir: You wrote me a letter but she was so short I don’t know what to say. You do- not say if you {want a shingle sawyer or not. and when you was going to start. I guess you do not Kknow anything about a shingle mill and I guess you don’t know how hard it is to get a good shingle sawyer. As you an- swer me so short you cango flying | plump to Hell you great big fool Answer this if you like to. Peter Lewitsen."” CHRISTMAS. When the conquering rays of to- morrow’s King of Day shall have dispelled the night’s darkness, a world of devout humanity will be illumined, chanting praises to the Father of the Son whose birth at Bethlehem is to be celebrated in every nook and corner penetrated by civilization. ) Asa holiday Christmas:* signifies more than a mere day ‘of relaxation from the ordinary pursuits of life; it’ means the exemplification. of those higher attributes, which makes the material life a more pleasing reality and at the same time emphasizing the Christian’s delightful anticipa- tions of the life everlasting, assured to them by the Babe whose coming was signilazed ‘by the Star in the East and the journey of the Wise Men. . These are the most significant facts of the day and from them come the demonstrations . of Peace on| Earth, Good Will Toward Men so properly and beautifully illustrated in the giving of gifts. The merri- ment of the glad Christmas time, the happy family reounions, the holly and the mistletoe, and above all, the tree entrancing entertainments for the young with the hanging stock- ings at the fire place for the con- venience of Santa Claus, combine in emphasizing the spirit of the day. And yet, the day can never be perfect so long as the yearning eyes of some children look in vain for the glittering Christmas trees, or run 1n gleeful anticipation on Christmas morn to their stockings to find only emptiness and disappointment. In many towns a band of ‘“Good Fellows” have signified their inten- tion of reducing the disappointments of the poor by playing Santa Claus and we could imagine no keener pleasure than to participate in so cheering a work, This is one phase of the day which merits deep thought and it is not too late for you to do something along this line. ~ !WHAT OTHER PAPERS SA l The Christmas Stocking.
