ESTIMATES OF DEAD VARY Loss of Life at Morris Plant Placed All the Way From Twenty-three- to Thirty and Only a Complete Roll Call Will Teil the Exact Figure—So Far- Twenty-one Bodies Have Been Taken From the Ruins. Chicago, Dec. 24.—Many more fire- men narrowly escaped death in the fire in the stock yards plant or Morris & Co., where probably twenty-six fire- men were killed. As the members: of ten engine com- panies were playing water on ware- house No. 6, where the flames had broken out afresh, the walls suddenly collapsed. Captain John Windheim ot Engine Company No. 64 was knocked down by flying timbers and seriously injured. William Sheridan, eighteen years ald, a clerk in the stock yards, was knocked off a platform and per- haps fatally injured. Late in the morning the- fire depart- ment was unable to say that the fire was under control. It was said that only a fira wall between warehouses No. 6 and No. 5 prevented another long fight against the flames. If the fire got through the wall from No. 6 it would be difficult for the firemen to check it. All night firemen worked on the blaze at the Morris plant. Firemen placed the list of dead and missing at varying numbers, from twenty-three to thirty. Twenty-three Known Dead. “We are almost sure there are twen- ty-three dead and possibly more,” said John P. Murphy, who was secretary to Chief Horan. “There will be no op- portunity fer a complete roll call for a few hours, and until that is made we cannot absolutely verify the list.” Twenty-one bodies, including that of Chief Horan, have been recovered and it is believed there are at least five others still buried in the debris. The police count places the number of dead at twenty-six. + Through the night fire was shooting high through the roof of two Morris buildings adjoining the one in.ruins. Fire Marshal James Horan, - who met death with more than twenty others. nearly all of whom were firemen, will, be given a public funeral, which will have something of a military charac- ter. The common council, a regiment of cavalry, a squadron of mounted po: lice and platoons of police and firemen, on foot, with public bodies and semi: public organizations leading the con- course of citizens who are expected to: ask to be permitted to show their af- fections for “Big Jim,” as the marshal, was known, will be features. Vye were adjudged not to be in contempt of court for the strictures they passed on the actions of a recent grand jury in Ramsey county by the state supreme court. On Oct. 19, this year, they were found to be in contempt of court for eriticising a report of the grand jury which failed to find indictments against certain saloon . keepers and cafe proprietors for ‘alleged “violations of the “lid” ordinance. The court holds that their statements did not ‘constitute contempt, though the peti- tion which they circulated contained groundless charges of misconduct on the part of the grand jury. Dr. Young and Professor Vye were sentenced to pay fines-of $50 o¥ serve thirty days in the county jail. The order adjudging them in contempt is dismissed. Madison Lake, Minn., Deec. 24.—Fire which started in the general store of J. J. Brown caused a loss estimated at $100,000 and wiped out practically all of the business district of this town. A hand pump operated By a volun- teer fire department was the only lo cal means of fighting the fire and though valiant work was done 2 high wind drove the flames onward and the reservoirs went dry. Help was asked of Mankato and help was sent by that city.’ However, an engines which Ely- sian agreed to send did not arrive un- til the fire had swept both"sides of the ‘main business street.
