In the evening of governor's day, Miss Tenie Murphy, of St. Paul, sang the first verse of ““The Star Spangled Banner” while the regiment was drawn up for guard mount. The applause was so strong that she sang the second verse and the regiment joined in the chorus. People in Lake City a mile away said that they could hear the sing- ing plainly. Water was scarce on the march and the men were told to save every bit they could. The wells in the neighborhood of the temporary camp | were so low that the farmers could give the men very little water. New York, June 25 —Porter Charlton, the young man who mur- dered his wife, may never be tried for crime. The New Jersey courts have held that the action was committed outside their juris- diction. If an attempt is made at extradition, he will be examined as to his sanity, and if found in- sane, will be committed to a suit- able instution in this country. Grand Forks, June 25—Frank L. McVey, president of the University of North Dakota, was given the degree of Doctor of Laws by Ohio Wesleyan University vesterday. President McVey graduated from Ohio Wesleyan before studying in Yale and Englaud. Minneapolis, june; 25— Three more deaths have been added to were due to the heat, Six horses have died from the heat during the last twenty-four hours, Des Moines, June 25— (Special to the Pioneer)—One person is dead and thirty injured, several seriously, as the result of a wreck on the Wabash railroad between Percy and Dunreath, W. G. Brown of Ottawa died at the city hospital early this morning as a result of his injuries. The St. Louis passenger, No. 3, bound for Des Moines struck a washout on a sharp turn and rolled down the embankment. The rear car was left standing on the track and, before all the passengers could leave the coach, a freight train crashed into it from behind. Lynn, Mass, June 25.—(Special to the Pioneer)—John L. Landrigan, a prominent shoe manufacturer of this city, was shot dead today and Policeman Carroll was mortally wounded when three highwaymen held them up and escaped with Landrigan’s payroll of $4500 which was being brought from the bank. As soon as they had grabbed the money the bandits, firing on all sides, fled toward Essex. Lifer Dies in State Prison. Stillwater June 24-Erick Frickson died last evening in the state prison hospital at the age of 70 years. He had been an inmate of the institu- tion for twenty two years, having been committed Feb. 8, 1888. He was indicted for murder in Chicago county and to escape hang- ing, pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree. The judge then im- posed a life sentence. The body was taken to the morgue to be held until relatives are heard from. Clearwater—Beltrami Case Postponed. The case of Clearwater vs Bel- trami counties was called into court June 21 and the attorneys agreed to a stipulation that the case should be taken before Judge Stanton on the first date sat he could fix. The Judge first set the case for July 21, but he thought that he could reach it before then so left the date to be settled latter. The case arose over the divison of the county debt when Clearwater county separated from Beltrami and was made an indepenent county. Forestry Student Drowned. Word comes from Park Rapids that a Mr. Oakley, of Red Wing, a student in the forestry school of the University in Itasca Park, was drowned Wednesday while in bathing. The accident is said to have been witnessed by several students. No detailsare yet known. Candidate for Sheriff.
