People are killed with adulterated food; and a fire recently in Brooklyn demonstrates the fact that monuments are made of wood. Where will it ever stop? — What is really needed to make things interesting is to get up some sort of a meeting to put an “anti- meat” plank into one or the other of the platforms on which candidates will stand before the .people, and take what mud is thrown at them. The mother of a family has no opportunity to make money. Her only opportunity to display busi- ness genius is in the economical out- lay of the family funds. The woman who carefully reads all the advertisements in her news- paper is not indulging in a mere feminine desire for nice things. She is studying the situation from day to day, watching for her oppor- tunity to buy what her family needs at the least cost. Much credit is due her. Often, if the head of the family would follow her wise example, . it would be far easier to make ends meet. Five hundred million dollars is expended annually in advertising in the United States. There must be a reason. It must be a legitimate reason. The adver- tisers must find this expenditure justified by the results or they would not continue the enormous expendi- ture from year to year. Those who respond to this ad- vertising must find their attention to it profitable, or otherwise they would not continue to patronize advertisers, and the entire business would collapse. Half a billion dollars cannot be successfully invested in a bunco game. ‘The vast bulk of this advertising must be legitmate and honorable, and must hold out bona fide inducements to purchase the wares offered. Consider the reason advertising exists. Does it not occur to you that the advertiser would not find his advertising profitable unless he offered you something to your advantage? Any other assumption would involve the notion that the adversisers, one and all, were flim. flaming all who answered their advertisements, which would be a foolish supposition. Advertising continues as a busi- ness because it pays both the adver- tisers and the readers of the adver- tisements. As a whistle advertises an empty head why not try the same scheme to call attention to empty houses. People who generally prefer quan- tity to quality generally get it in the neck. No woman ever says "wait a minute” if her husband offers her money. TONIGHT AT TEN 0'GLOCK EASY PROFIT WEEK ENDS [Continued from First Page.] Miss Hetland. 100 S.
