THE BEMIDJI DAILY PIONEER PPUBLISHED EVERY AFTERNOON EXCEPT SUNDAY BY THE BEMIDJI PIONEER PUBLISHING CO. E. H. DENU. €. E. CARSON. G. RUTLEDGE; Editor. Entered In the Postoffics id)l, Minnesota, class matter, SUBSCRIPTION:--$5.00 PER YEARIN ‘ADVANCE OUR NEW MANAGER. Bemidji Sentinel: ‘We notice that the local daily has commenced the publication of a "By The Way” column: The editor signs himself YE H, D.,” so we take it that the new managing editcr, Mr. Denu, is the author. His saying are bright, cheerful and breezy, and we, together with the public, will enjoy the col- uma. Mr. Denu is from Madison, Wis., and we learn that he served his news- paper apprenticeship on the Madison Daily Journal, and therefore evi- dently got his training under Dr. Wilder, a newspaper man of the first rank. Doctor Wilder was not only a keen newspaper man but a.scholary gentleman who trained his'men in a manner that made them not only a credit to his newspaper but a credit to society. Dr. Wilder is now minister to China, having been appointed to that honorable and im- portant post by President Taft. We have not the pleasure of Mr. Denu’s acquaintance, but feel sure that he is all that we and the public expect of him, and therefore extend to him greetings of a brother journal- ist, MORE MEMBERS WANTED FOR EDITORIAL ASSOCIATION. The newly-organized North-Cen- tral Minnesota Editorial association has in its territory the counties of Koochiching, Itasca, Beltrami,Clear- water, Cass, Hubbard, Wadena, Todd, Crow Wirg, Stearns, Otter- tail, Benton, Douglas, Pope and Aukin; and while the membership of the association embraces a large number of the newspapers published in these counties, yet there area number of the publishers who have not yet affliated with the associa- tion. At the meeting held in Sauk Certre, December 3.4, there was much busine~s of importance and of benefit to every publisher in this section, and more of the “boys” should have been present and benefitted thereby. It is the intention to give all of the publishers in the fifteen counties an opportanity to join the associa- tion, and a circular letter has been issued to the editors requesting their membership. It is hoped all will “come in,” as this association is a purely business affair, and politics will not be allowed to creep into the deliberations of the North- Central Minnesota organization, CAUSTIC COMMENT. The Thirteenth Ward Building and Loan association, a neighborhood af- fair, meets every month in the rear Toom of Clauss’ saloon. The members had just paid in their monthly dues and premiums when four Hungarians entered. Cash and loose silver lay in & heap-in the middle of a table. One robber took his stand near the front door, revolver in hand. A sec- ond covered the rear entrance. A third, with a revolver in either hand, lined up the Building and Loan associa- tion members; a fourth began shoot- ing into the ceiling. One member kept his head. Directly In front of him was $7,000 in cash and directly behind him the saloon safe, with open door. He grabbed as much of the money as he could hold in both hands, thrust it into the safe, slammed shut the door and turned the knob in defiance of the threatening re- volvers. Clauss, the saloonkeeper, rushed in and grappled with one of the thieves, |] who had scooped up what bills and change that were left, In the scuffle 8 revolver exploded and the bullet struck Fred Wepper in the face. His wound is not serious. The bandits hen bolted. RECORD PRICES FOR CORN Prize Product Sells at Rate of $2,345 per Bushel. London, Dec. 13—At a monster meet- ing in Albert hall Herbert Henry As- quith, the British prime minister, laid down the policy on which the Liberal government is appealing to the coun- try. He repeated what had been said by other ministers—that if it were re- turned to power the government would demand the limitation of the power of the house of lords—and then went a step farther and pledged that the Liberal party would grant self-govern- ment to Ireland. The meeting was marked by the greatest enthusiasm of an audience which filled the vast hall and which ‘was composed entirely of men, women having been denied admission in the fear that there might be a counter demonstration by suffragettes. Every corner of the hall had been searched during the day for women and a small vand of them was routed out, but they managed to get two male supporters into the meeting, who interrupted Mr. Asquith momentarily with cries of “Votes for women!” Then they were promptly ejected.
