BEMIDJI'S HORSES WILL | BE RAGED IN WISCONSIN Prince ~ Hal, Bessie Barolite and Brownie Mack Are Training.— Leave Next Week. William Begsley and Harry Guns- alus, owners of Prince Hal, and Thomas Newby, who .owns Bessie Barolite and also has Brownie Mac to race this year, will take their horses to Rhinelander and other towns in northern Wisconsin and Michigan for participation in the races which will be held throughout this section during the month of September. A The first of these race meets be- gins at Reinelander on September 8. Then follows the meet at Ashland and at the other towns in the circuit A. B. Hazen of this city has filed for republican nomination for sheriff of Beltrami county at the primaries to be held September 15. There is probably no man in Beltrami county who is better known or who has a larger acquaintance than pioneer residents of Bemidji, and has always been prominent in every move calculated to-advance the best county. A. B. Hazen.” He is one of the interests of this city and Beltrami enter Prince Hal in the free-for-all race in tke meets. The Prince has been having a rest of some three week’s after campaigning through- out northern Minnesota and Mani- toba, where he participated in many trying races, and had several differ- ent drivers up behind him. Mr. Begsley will probably drive Prince Hal and will try to bring out the best.speed there is in him, and if the horse is “right” he should give a splendid account of himself through- out the Wisconsin circuit. Mr. Newby will enter Bessie Barolite in the 2:20 class races, and probably in some of the 2:17 class. Bessie is going fast and should bring home quite a bunch-of money |, for her owner. Mr. Newby also has Brownie Mac to take along with Bessie Barolite and he will enter Brownie in the 2:40 races. This mare is owned by T. J. Nary of Park Rapids. She started as a green mare this spring and has already made an excellent show- ing, and it is expected that she will do very well during the September races. s The Bemidji horses will be shipped to Rhinelander the first of next week. Recent Court Decisions. Recently Judge Stanton has ren. dered a decision in the case of Mrs. A. Lemloh vs, the town of Durand, in which suit was brought in the sum of $120 damages for what was alleged to have been the unlawful appropriation of certain territory in the Town of Durand for road pur- poses, Judge Stanton deciding that the action of the Town of- Durand in taking the land-in controversey for road purposes was legal in all respects and ordered that judgment be entered for the defendant. A. A. Andrews appeared as -attorney for the plaintiff and Gibbons & Torrance were attorneys for the defendant township. Judge McClenahan has denied the application of the motion for a new trial in the case: of the City of Bemidji vs. Christ Olson, wherein the defendant was found guilty by a jury at the March term of the district court of haying violated the liquor laws by keeping his saloon open on Sunday. The defendant, through his attor- ney, P. J. Russell, made application for a new trial, which has been denied by the judge. J. F. Gibbons appeared as attor- ney for the City of Bemidji. VURPILLAT ~ WILL POSITIVELY VISIT BEMIDJI NEXT WEEK Story Told by a Travelling Man at the Markham Hotel Describing Sensa- tion Created in Minneapolis. First Free Entertainment and Band Concert Will be Given Monday Night. A rather interesting account of “Vurpillat,” who is reported as about to visit Bemidji was given by a gentleman who spent some time in Minneapolis, during Vurpillat’s recent visit to that city. Mr. Chas. Franz, a traveling sales- man was-talking in the lobby of the Markham hotel and said: “I made Minneapolis during the last week of this man Vurpillat’s stay in that city, and I was suiprised at the amount of talk that went on about him. I heard it on every side, in hotels in street cars on the street and even the men I called on in a business way had something to say about him. The papers were full of his doings and from what I heard he must have either a very remark- able medicine or else some peculiar power to win people into believing in him. “I went around, out of curiosity, to his headquarters, where his pre- parations were being sold and I never saw anything like it in all my life. I stayed only half an hour, but during that time the office was positively packed with people, waiting to buy medicine. Al of his assistants were busy wrapping up the “Vurpillat prepara- tions during the “entire- time I was there, and I.was told it was like that all day long. “I am in no position to say how good his preparations are, but I heard that he had done everything but ‘make the blind - see, in Minnea- polis, but I suppose it was largely due to exaggeration that those tales got abroad. He is said to bea generous ‘cuss’ and gave money to poor peonle, hand over fist. He is an unusual man, and if he is as successful here as in Minne- apolis, you will see something inter- esting. The people seem to go crazy over him wherever he goes.” Vurpillat’s business manager stated that he had arranged with the Bemidji Band to give free band con- certs in connection” with the Vaude- ville show that is to be given nightly commencing Monday August the 31st on the vacant lots corner of Fourth street and.
