Sume queer birds_roost in fa- mily treés. One lie can run faster than t vo truths—but it seldom has to. Success has made a fool of many an otherwise sensible man, When a man has no religion of his own, he is apt to hide behind his wife’s. The man who invented the term “mental fatigue” conferred a blessing on all the lazy men in the world. After a man gets about so drunk he thinks other people think he isn’t. It takes two to have a quarrel; it takes but one to talk scandal— but you can get into trouble -all by yourself, Solomon had- 600 wives and was the smartest man in the world; he had to be either that or the biggest,. fool. Lahore, British India, May 11.—It now looks as if nothing could prevent a serious outbreak among the natives here and the authorities are taking all the steps possible to suppress it by force of arms. The political unrest is hourly as- suming graver proportions. Bands of stalwart men, armed with bludgeons, who have been enlisted with the leaders of the sedition, are crowding into the native city and troops of all arms and bodies of po- lice, mounted and dismounted, are he ing drafted into the city of Lahore from all parts of the province. REFUSE UNION RECOGNITION Efforts to End Frisco Street Car Strike | Fail. 5 San Francisco, May 11.—Despite the efforts of the citizens’ committee the settlement of the street railroad strike seems as far off as ever. The United Railroads officials decline positively to recognize the. Carmen’s union.on the ground that it went out of exist- ence when the company discharged its employes for disobeying the order to appear for work at the car barns on Tuesday morning last. This position taken by the company acts as a handi- cap in any efforts to bring about a settlement, the only answer received from the officials being that they have nothing to arbitrate and that they pro- pose to run their cars. So far the militia has not appeared upon the scene and it is hoped that the necessity will not arise for calling upon it. The police is now showing its abil-| ity to fully cope with the difficulty and the only question is as to the force required to cover the disturbed area, whether it is numerically strong enough. S INNOCENT - MAN - PARDONED “Sherlock Holmes” Proves That the Police Blundered. - London, May 11.—Announcement is made that a free pardon has been granted to George Edalji, the young Birmingham lawyer who was conyict | ed four years ago of mutilating neigh- bors’ horses and cattie and sentenced to seven years’ penal servitude. In- vestigations led by Henry Labouchere and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who be- came interested in the case, have, it is stated, established Edalji’s inno- cence and demonstrated that the po-! lice blundered. Recently Sir Conan Doyle, after a! personal investigation, pronounced t"e case similar in maay respects to thut of Captain Dreyfas. Remarkable Storm in Wyoming.
