Those who have been freely criticising the village marshal of Elroy, Wis., for the laxity which allowed the murderer, Riggs, to kill himself, should put them- selves in the officer’s place for a minute and ask what they would have done. Riggs had been known to the citizens of the little village as a ! |respected passenger conductor ! | for twenty years and he was on =< |terms of intimacy with the marshal. Suddenly the order comes by wire from the Minne- apolis police to arrest him on the charge of an atrocieus, cold- blooded murder. Being suspected by the police is not proof of a person’s guilt, and does one suppose for a minute the Elroy marshal be- lieved his friend guilty? Does one suppose his hundreds of friends in the village believed him guilty? Under such circum- stances wculd anyone have handled the man as one would a desperate criminal? Riggs asked permission to step into a toilet room. It was grantedand hecommitted suicide. And not until then did the mar- shal realize, as anyone else would not have realized, the conductor’s guilt.
