Figures that show this result have been prepared by experts who know whereof they speak. Acompetent civil engineer for each county in the state is recommended in another resolution, whose duty it will be to lay out and supervise tke building and repairing of all roads. The engineer will take the place of the present road oyerseers. ‘The third resolution relates to the making of material for road building. at state institutions to be furnished free by the state. The material referred to The state department of education tolerated. Under the above estimates has notified Mrs. Hattie F. Booth, county superiatendent of schools and Prof. C. D. Newberry, conductor of the summer school for teachers in Grand Rapids, that Prof. Herbert Blair will deliver three lectures in this village on Friday and Saturday, July 20and 21. Prof. Blair has been an instructor in the Duluth Normal, but for the past year has been a traveller and student through European countries. He is classed among the most eminent educators of the country and his lectures here should attract a large audience. Prof. Newberry, in conversation with a Herald-Review reporter, remarked that the people usually du not appreci- ate the benefits that may be derived the taxes for next year will be about the same as Jast year. It was consid- ered safe to figure on the assessed valuation of the county to beivereas- ed from eleven millions to fourteen millions. This will hold down the rate of taxation to about what it was, the past year. Should the increased valuatior of iron properties. not prove as great as is anticipated therate will be increased. This condition may largely be traced to the insane ambi-. tion of Spéar to. keep his name con« spicuously before the. public asa criminal prosecutor. Heretofore it has been the prevailing custom by the county and township authorities to build a piece of road and then entirely abandon it in the matter of repairing until ab- solute necessity demanded its rebuild- ing. This manner cf doing business not only made pvor highways at all times, but.io the end is far more ex- peasive than if the original work done had\been kept up. Thousands of dollars have been squandered in tion to the rule and fill the High school auditorium when Prof. Blair is here. The lectures are calculated for the general public as well as the rég= ular attendants at the school, and a large attend» nce is always an evidence of the interest taken in educational affairs by the people of any com- munity. Prof. Blair will lecture Friday morning at the auditorium to the schvol attendants and in the eve- ning the public is especially invited to attend. He will also delivera lecture ney. In the matter of. right of way for the new. road surveyed between Grand Rapids and Bovey a relinquisa- ment of all claims for damages was received from Bevey & DeLaittreand T. B. Walker. It was stipulated in the agreement that in case a change uf route sbould at any time become necessary by reason of new cre discov- eries that the change should be made without expense to the owners of the land through which the road is being built.
