This weather may make us burn a little more fuel, but what’s the difference whether the coal trust gets our money or the ice trust? : Cole Younger is being heard from again, this time as the star actor in a bank-robbery show to be pulled off in Kansas City on the Fourth. The next time the soft-hearted people of Minnesota want to secure a pardon or parole ior a highwayman and murderer let them consider well the case of Cole Younger. “Talk ischeap, which makes it wonderful that so little is heard from Russell Sage,” remarks the Passing Show man in the Duluth Herald. Talking may be cheap, but it takes time and time is worth money. While the other fellows are giving advice, ‘““Your Uncle”’ is raking in the coin. Several exchanges have in- sinuated that the Bemidji census enumerators were sent out with instructions to get a population of 5,000 by hook or crook. Such inferences should not in justice to the city be allowed to pass un- noticed, although it is really a lowering of dignity to notice them. The men who took the census and the men who sent them out had no. other desire than to ascertain the exsct number of people living in this city. There was no padding; no taking from hotel registers of names of transients long since gone, no taking of names from tomb-stones, no faking of names and addresses, or any of the other tricks known to the trade. Bemidji’s population of 5,191 is bona fide. A~ The State Press Passing Show, in Duluth Herald: What isso rareas a dry day in June? News and Comment in Duluth News Tribune: A, I. Cole, among other things, will make plain to the people of Minnesota that development of the north country 1s not necessarily det- rimental to the interests of any other part of the state and ex- plain that the north country is asking only for its due and that he is fit to be governor of Minne- sota because he believes in just< ice to the whole state. Stillwater Gazette: Served him right. A wealthy farmer|- near Fairfax, Minn.,, named Tabor Thurston, advertised for a wife. And advertising “brought the goods. The couple met and the ‘Homme, ¢ 0 marry, care for and protect her, all of which he promptly denied, save and except that he met her. The jury thought $5,000 wasa little too much for her lacerated feelings, bat $8,000 would heal the wounds and rendered a ver- dict for that amount.” Who says it doesn’t pay to adyertise? Not Mary. UNTIL ARREARS ARE WIPED OUT. Supreme Lodge, United Workmen, Levies Special Assessment. Montreal, June 27.—The supreme lodge, Ancient Order of United Work- men, has conclu:led its sessions here. To place the order on a more sub- stantial basis the foilowing action was taken: The present indebtedness of the order will be met by an assessment of 10 cents per month upon each mem- ber until the arrears are wiped out; this to be applied to lodges which have failed to meet their obligations. Each high rate jurisdiction before re- " ceiving aid from the general order must agree to put in force the follow- ing rates before Oct. 1: $1.24 per month per $1,000 at the age of eight- een years and scaling up to $2.05 at thirty-five; §3.09 at forty-six; $4.04 at fifty-two to the extreme limit of $9.65 at seventy years. Specified forms of policies are exempted. The~ guarantee fund established three years ago and which resulted in the secession of several grand lodges hag been abolished.
