SUBSCRIPTION &5 PER YEAR The Ma.n Who Does Things - Crookston Timés:—Senator Stephens will have more votes at Duluth than the political dop sters are giving him credit for. Of the seven avowed candidates for the’ republican nomination, Senator Stephens is doing the least shouting, and his name, perhaps, finds its way into the newspapers the least frequently. But - his reputation for doing things is pretty well established in Minnesota and it is this which will make him strong at Duluth, Wlen he went to the senate four years ago, he was a new man among veterans, many of whom were ‘exceedingly able men, Nobody in the state at large expected anything out of the ordinary from the senator from Polk. He soon came for- ward with a proposition to loan state funds to counties for drain- age purposes at three per cent s interest, thus reducing the rate of interest paid by the counties by four per cent, and vastly en- couraging the drainage move- ment. Here was a real policy of state of deep significance. The man from Polk was gunning for big game. The game was too big to be bagged in one session and that by a novice. So comprehensive a - policy might be adopted by the state in two years, in four, at some future time, but the wise cnes smiled at the tementy of a new member attempting such im portant legislation and dismissed from their minds the possibility of its passage. Yet when the measure came up for final deci- sion the man from Polk was there with the votes. The mcst important piece of legislation ever enacted in Minnesota in re- gard to drainage was conceived and placed upon the books by Senator Stephens at his first session. For a new member Stephens was running well up with the bunch of leaders. Early in Senator Stephens second session he proposed the creation of a branch agricultural school at the University to be lo cated at Crookston. Here was another brand new policy, that of establishing a branch of Minne- sota’s famous agricultural school. This might be a very good idea said the wise ones, but we had better think awhile before we be- gin the system away up there at Crookston in the northern part of the state. Once more they dis missed they matter as a present impracticability. But when the votes were counted late in the session 1t appeared that the sen- ator from Polk had enough and more to establish the branch school at Crookston. These are just two examples. Senator Stephens accomplished some other very important things during his first term in the legis- lature, but these two, one taken from each session, show that ap- preciating the state’s need and for ability in devising and giving force to means to satisfy those needs, Senator Stephens has no superior in the state. It is because of his ability to|; do jusi such things that the “Andy Stephens” club of 1,500 members is now urging his nom- ination for governor. That is the kind of a governor that Minne- sota wants. FIGHT FOR IMMENSE ESTATE. Over Weightman Taken Up in Court. Philadelphia, May 22.—The contest over the estate of Willlam Weight- man, the millionaire manufacturing chemist, came up during the day in the orphans’ court. The principals in the case are Mrs. Jones Wister and Mrs. Anna Weightman-Walker. The latter was the sole heir of Mr. Weight- man, whose estate is estimated to be almost $60,000,000. Mrs. Jones Wister was the wife of William Weightman, Jr., and after his death she married Jones Wister. The suit was brought in the name of Martha Wister, the only grandchild of William Weight- man, who is a minor. It is charged that Mrs. Wallker exerted undue influ- ence over the testator and that he was of unsound mind when the will ‘was executed. It is also charged by Mrs. Jones Wister that a codicil mak- ing provision for her children, Mr. Weightman’s grandchildren, was de- stroyed. iy ‘When the case was called counsel for Mrs. Walker said she was ill and unable to appear. The case was conm- tinued until: June. Sl Contest Millions statute | av UPRISING IN PANAMA FEARED. Force of Amerfcan Marines Prepared to Maintain Order. ‘Washington, May 22.—Although an official statement to that effect cannot be had it is known that the marines now being shipped on the cruiser Co- lumbia at League Island, Pa. are bound primarily for Guantanamo, Cuba, there to be kept in readiness for any emergency that may arise on the isthmus of Panama. The elections that will take place there next month may be accompanied by revolationary disorders; in fact, certain inquiries that have been directed to Governor Magoon by discontented party leaders have been followed by threats of an uprising against the Amador adminis- tration. These have led Secretaries Root and Taft to serve notices upon the malcontents that no such mani- festation will be permitted anywhere near the canal zone or at any place where the peace of the zone may be threatened. To give effect to this no- tice the navy will have a sufficient force of marines on either side of the isthmus to maintain order and to this end the Columbia Is going to a given point for observation or action if nec- essary on the Gulf side, while the Marblehead is nearing Panama, on the Pacific coast, BRIEF BITS OF NEWS. Whatever max be the fact as to many of the so-called patent medicines eon- cn.ininf injurious ingredients as broadly ublished in some journals of more or less influence, this publicity has certainly been of great benefit in arousing needed attention to this subject, It has, in a considerable measure, resulted in the most intelligent people avoiding such foods and medicines as may be fairly sus- ected of containing the injurious fngre- sients complained of. Recognizing this fact some time ago, Dr. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y., “took time by the forelock,” as it were, and published broadcast all the ingredients of which his popular medi- cines are composed. Thus he has com- pletely forestalled all harping eritics and all D\fposiflon that might otherwise be urged against his medicines, because they are NoW OF KNOWN COMPOSITION. Fur- thermore, from the formula printed on every bottle wrapper, it will be seen that these medicines contain no_alcohol or other habit-forming drugs. Neither do they contain any narcoties or injurious agents, their ingredients being 'purely vegetable, extracted from the roots of medicinal plants found growing in the depths of our American forests and of well recognized curative virtues. Instead of alcohol, which even in small portions long continued, as in_obstinate cases of diseases, becomes highly objec~ tionable from its tendency to_produce a craving for stimulants, Dr. Pierce em- ploys chemically pure, triple - refined glycerine, which of itself is a valuable remedy in many cases of chronic diseases, being ‘a superior demulcent, antiseptic, antiferment and supporting nutritive It enhances the curative action of the Golden Seal root, Stone root, Black Cherrybark and Bloodroot, contained in “Golden Medical Discovery,” in all bron= chial, throat and lung affections attended with severe coughs. As will be seen from the writings of the eminent Drs. Grover Coe, of New York; Bartholow, of Jeffer- son Medical College, Phila.; Scudder, of Cincinnati; Ellingwood, of Chicago; Hale, of Chicago, and others, who stand as leaders in_their several schools of practice, the foregoing agents are the wery hest ingredients that Dr. Pierce could have chosen to make up his fa- mous “Discovery” for the cure of not only bronchial, "throat and lung affec- tions, but also of chronic catarrh in all its various forms wherever located.
