COMMISSIONER HOST ON STAND. 8prings Sensation in Wisconsin Insur. ance Investigation. Milwaukee, May 18.—The most sen- sational testimony which. has Deen presmated to the special insurance in- vestigating committee of the Wiscon- sin legislature was given when Insur- ance Commissioner Host of the Wis.: consin department of insurange testi- fled before the committee that on June 16, 1903, the day on which the hearing in the case of the state of ‘Wisconsin against the Equitable Life Assurance society of the United States for a compulsory distribution of the surplus of that company to Wisconsin policyholders was to be held by him, Secretary of State Walter L. Houser entered the insurance commisgioner’s office and said that if Mr. Host would render a decislon in accordance with a slip handed by Mr. Houser to Mr. Host, which would have been a de cision favorable to the Equitable com- pany, that the Fquitable Life Assur- ance society would give $2,000 toward o campaign fund for a renomination of the state officers in the next cam- paign, Botn Secretar‘of State Houser and Insurance ComnMssioner Host have been among the most prominent T.a Follette men of this state. Secretary Houser is running for a third term and in his testimony he intinfated strongly "that he considered the charges a campaign move against him, Because of the prominence of the parties politically the testimony of Mr Host is an immense pélitical sensa- tion as well as an insurance sensation In this state. FEAR EFFECT OF EARTHQUAKE. Senate Committee’s Reason for Favor- ing Se Level Canal, Washington, May 18.—That the earthquake which destroyed San Fran- cisco was an important factor in de- termining the vote of the senate com: mittee on interoceanic canals in favor of a sea level type is apparent from the fact that a feature of the majority report is a discussion of the effect such an earth wave might have on locks and dams. The majority report in favor of a sea level canal was sub- mitted by Senator Kittredge. On the subject of danger from earthquakes on the isthmus and the possible effect on the two types of canal proposed the report says: “The canal structures that would be most exposed to injury by the pass- ing of an earth wave or violent move- ment of the earth’s surface are the locks proposed by the minority, whose walls, many hundreds of feet, or even 2,000 or 32,000 feet long at Gatun would, at least some of them, he more than seventy-five feet high and en tirely unsuppored-on one side save for a part of the height by water. 1f these walls should be moved at all the natural and probable resalt would be in their leaning and s event the closing of the gates—an fujury for which a suzgestion of extra gates on hand would be useless, for no one could guess the extent of the move- cffect ot re of which ment. But the most like! such shoek would Le the these 1o in repairin of much time nonths or be required and thus ecaus tion of traffic or the abaundonment ot the canal.” STRIKERS IN UGLY MOOD. Battalion of Troops on Duty at Coey: mans, N. Y. Coeymans, N. Y., May 18.—This vil- lage slept under military guard for the first time in its history. The Second battalion of the Tenth ment, called out by the request of Sheriff Pitts of Albany county, is encamped on the bluffs overlooking the buLl\ yards of Sutton & Sudderly. It wd upon these yards that the striking Italian brickmakers, 500 strong, made an armed attack, which resulted in the wounding of several men. The soldiers are guarding the houses of the employers and _every approach to the scene of the trouble and the villagers had the novel ex- perience of being halted in the streets and required to account for themselves at the point of the bayonet. It is evident that the troops must pe here two or three days at least. ‘The strikers are in an ugly mood and the people of the village are fearful of acts of reprisal. RUSSIAN OFFICER KILLED. in Cruel Treatment of Girl Assassin, Tamboff, Russia, May 18.—Zhanoff, a police officer who participated in the brutal maltreatment of Maria Spiri- donovo, was shot and killed on the streets here by an unknown person. The avengers of the young revolution- ist recently meted out the same fate at Borissogliebsk to Abramoff, the Cossack officer who boasted of his cruelty to her while she was in prison. Maria Spiridonovo, the young daugh- ter of a Russian general, shot and killed Chief of Police Luzhnsky of Tambofl. She was condemned to be banged, but her sentence was com- muted to twenty years’ imprisonment. The girl was terribly treated in prison immediately after committing the crime by Abramoff and another Cos- sack officer. Participated Fourth Trial of Caleb Powers, Cincinnati, May 18.—Caleb Powers, now in the Newport (Ky.) jail, has been ordered back to the custody of the Kentucky state courts, following the mandate of the United States su- preme court. Powers will next be ar- raigned for his fourth trial for com- plicity in the murder of Governor William Goebel. Members May Be Photographed. Des Moines, May 18.—The River Brethren, in national conference here, will probably abolish the rule which for years has prohibited members of the church being photographed, this: being considered a sign of vanity.
