Bernard, president of the Minnesota Drainage league, takes exception to the criticism of certain newspapers through- out the state which have seen fit to inquire into the affairs of the league and to ask by what action of this body Mr. Bernard is now in Washington lobbying for a drainage appropriation. It has been stated that the amount col- lected by Mr. Bernard and Hays was $3,000, but Mr. Bernard de- nies this in the following state- ment: i “The charge is made thata fund of $3,000 has been raised to pay the expenses of myself and Mr. Hays here. In_ the first place, Hays: isn’t here and has not been here this winter. In the second place, the total of the 'l cash contributions to the league is $400, given by the Minneap- olis Chamber of Commerce. Help I’has been promised from other sources, but has not yet been re- ceived. The league has not had any individual contributions from business men of the twin cities. One Duluth commercial organiza- tion voted to subscribe $1,000, but afterwards reconsidered the vote and the money was never contributed.” Mr. Bernard must have prac- tised economy since his visit to Washington in - the interests of the Morris bill several years ago if the above statement is true, The people of Cass Lake well res member the frequent demands upon their purses by Bernard while the latter sojourned at the national capital and if the amount required by him to pass the Mor- ris bill were compared to the {1 $400 which he claims is all tha § [ has ! | drainage fund he ought to travel been - subscribed to the the country over giving an illus- trated lecture on ‘“Evolution in Economy’’ instead of monkeying around at Washington at $400 a session. THE approzch of the spring months brings forth in the mails “the revised and new price lists of the catalogue houses in a more attractive cover and more fully illustrated from cover to cover than ever before.”’ That adver- tising pays them is evidenced by the large orders received at the local depots and the drafts issued by the local banking concerns. Stephens of Crookston was in Minneapolis yesterday and met several of his friends. He declined to discuss seriously the proposition of bringing him out as” a candidate for governor. Itis understood, however, that the Polk county delegation, and possibly others from the ninth district will come down for Stephens. Thereislittle enthusiasm in that part of the state over other candidates who haye been mentioned. Jacob- son seems to have the most strength, but there is hostile feeling toward him on the drain. age proposition.
