The Minneapolis Journal in an article yesterday denies that the Minneapolis commercial clubjhad anything to do with the drainage lobby at Washington and says: “*Northern Minnesota papers are attacking the officers of the state drainage league, A, G. Ber- pard, president, and H. G. Hays, secretary, for spending their time in Washington rather than at home. Furthermore they hold twin city mberests respon- sible. “Whatever question of pro- priety there may be in the ac- tions of the officers of the league, they received no assistance from the commercial club,” said Wal- lace G. Nye of the public affairs committee today. ‘‘A’ request for funds made to the club |through our committee was re- fused, Itis true, as the papers of the northern part of the state say that the business interests of the twin cities are interested in the drainage of the vast areas of northern lands that are now useless. We did not, however, approve the purpose of the fund. So far as I know, Minneapolis in- terests refuscd to respend very freely to the requests, and are in no way interested in the Wash- ington lobby.” The attack on the city interests that are said to be keeping the officers of the league in Washing- ton are coming thick and fast. It is maintained that the officials should remain at home te prose- cute the work, and that the twin city interests are overstepping themselves in assisting. The fact that the prominent business assoviations of the twin cities turned dewn the requests re- leases them from any responsi- bility for the absence of the president and secretary but does not explain the lobby fund.” Read the Daily Pioneer.
