WORKED NEAT SWINDLE GAME Minnesota Avenue Merchant Falls Into Trap That Was Laid For Him. One of the most clever swind- ling games ever worked in Be- midji was successfully perpetra- ted upon W. G. Schroeder yes- terday forenoon. Two well dressed men entered his store on Minnesota avenue. One bought a small quantity of goods and presented a $20 gold certifi- cate in payment. Theclerk did not have the change and he went back to Mr. Schroeder’s desk, where change was made and given 1o the purchaser. The latter, after receiving his bundle, walked back to the desk and asked Mr. Schroeder if he could give him a $10 bill for that amouut of silver. Mr. Schroeder passed out the biil and as he did so the swindler asked if he could give him back the gold certificate for change. Mr. Schroeder re- plied in the affirmative and handed out the certificate and | the swindler gave him back the $10 in silver which he first laid out on the desk and the $10 bill which Mr. Schroeder had laid on the desk, thus coming out $10 winner on the transaction. Mr. Schroeder discovered his mis- take in a short time and aftera ° vigorous search found the two men at the Great Northern depot. One was placed in the bhands of the police and taken to head- quarters, where he gave back the $10 and was allowed to go. Specia groceries.
