AT A SPECIAL election called for this evening the people of Be- midji are asked to authorize the board of education to issue bonds for $5000 with which tobuy two school sites. The sites named are the Catholic church property, including the building, and a two acre tract in the extreme north- western part of town. Ifthis bond issue is authorized, it will take the place of the issue of $10,000 authorized by the dis- trict some four months ago. The new plan thus provides for ahundant scBool room atone half the expense contemplated hers- tofore. If the Pioneer understands correctly the plan of the board of education it intends, in case the bond is ue is authorized, to purchase both sites at once and to immediately remodel the Catholic church into two' school accommodation of children at the s | opening of school in September. y | The site and the work of remod- eling will cost $2000, thus leaving the board with $3000 for a build- ing to be erected in the north- western part of town, the cost of the second site being but $150. While the second ward school . |building is not urgently needed {at once it will undoubtedly be needed as $oon as it can be com- pleted. This plan seems sensible, feas- ible and economical. Sensible, for it will proyide abundant school room easily accessible to all the children of the city; feas- ible, because the additional school room which is demanded can be secured at once; economi- cal, involving a total expenditure of but $5000 to care for the growthin school population for several years to come, The Cunning of the Rus- sian. M, WirTk, KRussia’s peace plenipotentiary, is making the effort of his life in connection with the peace negotiations. | Beaten on land and sea and utter- |1y humiliated in war, Russia still hopes to win by cunning diplo- macy. Japan has made certain de- mands as a condition of peace. Several of these Russia declares impossible and not alone at Ports- mouth but through /every news- paper in the United States Rus- sia is now attempting to show that if Japan’s demands are | the commerce of this country. By appealing to the pocket books of the American people Russia hopes to snatch victory from the | jaws of defeat. Japan’s demands known. foe? itself, after forced upon it and after having been so completely suceessful, ask less from its vanquished enemy? Japan’s demands may be severe upon Russia’ but they are moderate demands for a vic- torious nation to make.
