His life is exploited in every newspaper and every magazine is eloquent of his deeds. We rejoice as a people that we have recovered his bones and that we may lay them in Ameri- can soil and erect over them a monument which shall commem- or@te'the life of a great American and the deeds of a national hero, for the life of Paul Jones isone of the most glorious chapters in the history of our country. But what shall we say of Paul Jones? Itisnot too much, and itis but simple justice, to say that his spirit founded the Ameri- can navy and that it is the spirit of Paul Jones that animates it to- day. Higher praise than this could hardly be given to any patriot. Business Conditions. BusiNEss conditions generally are steadily improving. There has been general complaint for a year past that times were dull and they were so in comparison with the two or three years im- mediately preceeding. Those two or three years were years of great plenty, of most abundant prosperity and it was too much too belieye that they could con- tinue indefinitely. The inevit- able reaction, together with the long drawn out campaign of 1904, made times seem dull and com- plaint was general,' not only throughout the northwest, but all oyer the country. Yet legiti- of all kinds were slowly taking surer root and almost every institution of this class which you can name is on a firmer footing today than it was two years ago. Prosperity may not beas super abundant today as it was then but itis more stable. We know today that there will be no reaction, that business conditions are cer- tain to grow better rather than To the business man mate enterprises worse. who looks ahead and considers what shall be the net result of all his labors this condition is more satisfactory than would ke a period of luxuriant “boom.” THE St. Cloud Journal Press thinks that Senator Brower is about the right man for govern- y |or and intimates that he will go some when the time comes. Senator Brower is an able man and would make a splendid gov- ernor and if he is nominated the Pioneer will be pleased to give him 1ts support but his selection would be from a political stand- point as wise as that of Mr. Clag- gett of Princeton for instance. THE prospects for a good crop in the northwest this year are very flattering. If hail, rain, wind, the boll weevil, rust etc., will spare us for a few weeks longer we shall have a most profitable crop and a profitable crop is a matter of more con- cern to this immediate section than many believe. M. Bagley: The future growth of Bemidji depends upon the investment by local capital in manufacturing enterprises. It is no use to waste time waiting for factories to be thrust upon us or to spend our money giving bonuses to outside concerns. We should establish factories our- selves. W. B. Stewart: The Chapter of Royal Arch Masons recently organized in Bemidji gives evidence of becoming a strong lodge. Several candidates have already been given the degrees and others are on the way, al- though the lodge is not yet fully organized and is working under dispensation from the Grand Chapter. Olaf Huseby: My mission in this country is principally to keep the people of Norway and Sweden advised of the best that America has to offer for immi- grants, We can’t stop emmigra- tion and the only thing for us to dois to protect our people by seeking out the best places for those who are determined to make new homes for themselves here.
