The End of Immigration, “IMMIGRATION”, says the Rail- way Age, “reflects extreme dif- ference of economic opportunity infayor of the receiving country.’’ The day will come, and itis not very far away, when there will no longer be any immigra- tion to this country from the old world.§ When there is no longer any difference of economic oppor- tunity in favor of this country immigration will cease. The peo- ple of Europe will then be con- tent to stay where they are. A study of the sources of immigra- tion that they have changed wonderfully during the past century. The bulk of our immigrants now come from Italy, Hungary, Russia, Armenia, ete, where they formerly came from Ireland, Scaudinayia and Ger- many. Economic conditions in the latter countries have become morej{bearable and there is less difference in favor of the United States, consequently thereis less immigration from these states. Time is gradually working the shows states of Europe, and while the people of the old world still pour upon our shores in thousands and tvens of thousands, it is but the matter of a quarter of a cen- tury, before these changes will haye been accom- plished and immigration ceases. perhaps, THE plan of the state immigra- tion bureau to send twin city newspaper the state is a good one but the ltinery mapped out is a poor one. Why not seud them to the great north central part of the state, which is comparatively little know, as well as to the Red river valley, which is already so well known? men through Number Nine. Lieutenant Peary is about to make his ninth attempt to reach the north pole. He will start for the frozen north in a few days and hopes in February or March to achieve what so many have at- tempted in vain. ; No liying man is better quali- _|tied for the attempt tLan Peary. His experience fits’ him for the difficulties and dangers of the trip as perfectly as these diffi- culties and danger can be antici- pated and provided against. His last attempt was made over the same route and furnished him i with information which will be invaluable for the coming trip The last stage of the trip will be by dog sledge and will be begun next February. So many attempts have been made to reach the north pole, and and the farthest north has been so far short of success, that we {have almost come to believe that | success is impossible. Probably few expect Lieutenant Peary to be successful. He himself, how- ever, expects to succeed, know ing just what he has o confend with and being better prepared ' lis quite possible that withina same changes with all of the| year we shall read of another glorious feat accomplished by a daring American.
