Bemidji Bible Conference! ‘NexT week Bemidji will be called upon to entertain ‘what promises to be the most import- ant gathering in its history—im- portant not because of its size or because of the wealth or station of its members, but because of its possiblities to this city. To everyone who has consider- ed the possibilities of Bemidji as a location for a summer Chatau- qua, or similar organization, it must be self evident that a per- manent institution of the kind would be of greater cash value than any other enterprise that could be established here. Such an institution, by care and enter- prise, and by reason of the enormously advantageous loca- tion of Bemidji, would in time grow so great as to make Bemidji one of the most famous summer resorts on the continent. The Bible Conference is a be ginning and upon the success of this first meeting next week much depends. The people of Bemidji are alive to the import- ance of the matter and are lend- ing every aid and encouragement to the project as they have every reason to do. Law Imperfect. A Rr1GID examination of whisk- ies by the state dairy and food commission during the past two or three weeks has developed the fact that every sample examined was legal. The commission, while announcing this factin a ‘bulletin, deems it necessary to explain that the term ¢legal” simply means that the whiskies éomply with the legal require- ,\"‘T‘lents. The fact that the whisk- ies have been found legal does not prove that they are pure; in fact, many of the samples exam- ined werefar from pure; they simply complied with the re- quirements of the law as to pro- hibited ingredients. The com- ission is given no authority by law to condemn these liquors; I they can simply certify to their legality. The law in this form is certainly a fit subject for radical amendment. THAT the government dams along the many ways a serious source of Mississippi are in river is true, but that the condi- tions are so grevious as to war- rant the prominence given them by the Duluth papers of late may be doubted. The systematic at- tack upon there dams and the great prominence @nd space given by the Duluth papers to these attacks suggest that power- ful interests have a reason for wanting them done away with. Even the newspapers in the territory most concerned are not one ter th ag ala-med as are ‘the Dt luth papers. David Harum will be presented | at the opera house tonight by the Curts Dramatic Co. Mr. Curts has been pronoun- ced as having noequal in the character of David Harum, who is a way-down-east banker and horse trader, a man who would rather make ten dollars on a horse trade than a hundred in| his hank; sharp, shrewd and witty with a kind heart and al- ways good natured. One of the scenes to be remem- bered is the horse trade with Deacon Perkins, where David says he was done so well he was burnt 1n places. Also the scene where the Daacoun gets caught in | a heavy shower of rain with the balky horse, and the one on Christmas morning in Aunt Polly’s sitting room, where David t:lls the story of his boyhood days and his trip to the country circus.
