It is freely admitted that the need of drainage is greater in northern Minnesota than in any other part of the state but it is indeed a great error to think that drainage is of no benefit except to this immediate section of the state. Even where no swamp lands exist, where no land is to be reclaimed by drainage, it has been repeatedly demonstrated that systematic drainage has in creased the productiveness of the soil from twenty five to one hundred per cent. The norihern half of the state will undoubtedly reap greater benefits from drain- age tLan will the southern half the matter is one in which the whole state is vitally interested. It is but natural and fitting that we who live in the part of the state where exists the great. est and the most immediate need for drainage should take the — | the initiative in this matter. This we have done and we now invite the state to look to its own inter- every county delegates to attend the | state drainage meeting in Crooks- ton early in August. There is not a single county in the state but can profit by sending a repre- sentative or representatives to this meeting. There is reason to believe that it will be the most important meeting ever held in the northwest in the history of the drainage movement and that it will contribute largely toward making systematic drainage a greal policy of state. Government Insurance. NOTWITHSTANDING the vigor- ous campaign that has been waged for public ownership of public utilities there is with the vast majority of the people of this country a profound distrust of the ultimate effects of this policy. The Grand Forks Herald, how- ever, in an able editorial on the life insurance question, while ad- new and fertile field for grafting and corruption, points out that the government has never yet in any branch of its service be come honeycombed with cor- ruption as has the private man- agement of a gréat hife insurance company. While all that is claimed of the imperfections of government control may prove true, the public even then, would be far better off than it was under the recent private management of the Equitable life assurance conipany. The startling revelatiors which have been made during the past few months as to the management of quasi-public insti- tutions by private enterprise have undoubledly set many to think- ing that public ownership of public utilities, with all its For b TS b FROM E NORTH: COUNTRY 4 TH meu Eveleth 2800. 5 —0— Walker 8, Pine River 4. —— Staples 2.000and better. =0 Verndale’s market day is great stuff, Perhaps one hot day will make a summer. —o— Blind piggers—Four—Fosston —8§50 each. —0— Fewer people at Long Prairie than in 1900. e 0 Wadena county bridges ani culverts go out. : —0— Fine spring and summer for fattening swamps. —0— Messeba Tele;-hone company buys out Iron Range at Grand Rapids. —o— The Gentilly, Polk county, cheese factory furnishes cream cheese for the world. —0 Strawberries at Northome so big that it only takes one to each piece of shortcake, —0— The Motley Wirdjammers are also ball lammers for they are cleaning up evi rything in sight. —— Folden™ and Leaf Mountain, Ottertail county, 1750 feet above sea level, are said to be the high- est points on the continent be- tween the Atlantic and the Paci- fic mountain ranges. » —0— The Staples World is promptly on hand notwithstanding the fact thatghe lack ofa compre- hensive system of drainage in northern Minnesota leaves its press standing in two feet of water. POLITICS As Others See it. Itasca Co. Independent: The talk of J. Adam Bede as the next governor on the republican ticket is growing. Mr. Bede, to be sure will have toget a larger field than the Eighth congres- sional district for his next cam- paign or else get some action on him in regard to the regulating of the upper Mississippi reser- voir system. Cass Lake Voice: The Wash- ington correspondent of the Du- luth News Tribune has sprung a story from the Washington Post that Congressman Bede would consent to be the Republi- can candidate for governor next year. Is this another way of making room for some candidate for congress from the Eighth district in place of the present incumbent, Hon. J. Adam Bede?
