DESPITE numerous attractions elsewhere, the public parks of thiscity were yesterday thronged all day long by hundreds of pecp'e. Bemidji’s public parks while not large are fairly numerous and are so sitvated as to be an ideal resort for a day’s rest There is no city in the northwest that is so fortunately situated in this respect as Bemidji and this is an advantage which we should not be slow to appreciate and to make the most of. A little care and a little money expended would make these parks much more attractive to our people. Nuture has done its best for us and it is time that the municipal ity did the litile that ir is called upon to do. A few walks laid oat, a few seuts i1stalled, a little supervisory care of the grounds on the part of the city will make our parks more beautiful and ac eessable and a greater source of pleasure and comfort to people. our America’s Great Loss. Ix THE death of John Hay the world loses one of its foremost diplomats and America its great- greatest statesman. The value of the seryices which John Hay has rendered to his country since he became Secretary of State in 1898 we shall be better able to judge with years but we realize that they are very great. In all the nations of the earth there is no man who stood higher in the esteem of his fellow diplomats than John Hay. Al- most as much through his diplomacy as through natural strength has the United States come to play a leading part among the nations of earth. Such men are difficult to replace. We may be able to do it but we have no man today who can take John Hay’s place and command the confidence of the nations as did he. Ourlossis greater in that his work is still unfinished; the great policies which he has so successfully inaugurated are yet to be brought to a happy con- clusion. In the choice of Hay’s President Roosevelt has to make the most important and difficult appointment of his administration. successor THE gain in population which Bemidji has made during the past five years will undoubtedly stand disclosed, when all the offic- ial figures are announced, as one of the most pronounced made by any of the cities of the state. The ratio of gain will exceed eighty per cent, and including Nymore, would be almost 100 per cent, Beltrami county, too, it appears will show a gain of about sixty per cent, a much higher ratio than the other counties of the state. I live in Roseau village and pay a poll tax, Ialso pay three dollar dog licenses and am in favor of “public owner- ship.” T believe in advertising, religion and the 17th of May., I want to advertise the soil of Rosean county and the village council for sale. I think it would be better for the street commis sioner to raise clover and ti mothy on the streets than dandelions, cows and thistles, because the soil will grow one just as good as the other and strangers will think we have streets flowing with milk and honey instead of water and slops. Some people who do not have three dogs and fleas keep cows, goats and boys. The boys are kept to drive the CoWws to a pasture a quarter of a mile away. The boys ride ponies and they have a wild west show chasing the cows all over the village. When the boys get tired the cows go to the pasture themselves. It takes two boys and ponies 8 hours to drive three cows. Some boys who have no ponies drivy their cows to the pasiure without any trouble. Cattle should be led through the the streets. A goat is good to eat bark off the treesand tin cans, Cows are not made to walk on the sidewalks. The mud and gravel on the crossings should be -cleaned off good and plenty and kept clean. A good street commissioners can keep the walks and streets looking fine if he keeps an eye open and sees that the work is done. A Dog Tax Payer. NEW TOWNS IN NORTH DAKOTA Extentions of Great Northern Railway Cause New Towns to Spring ™ Up. The extensive railroad build- ing now being done in North Dakota has brought tributary to railroad facilities an additional vast area of the rich agricultural sections of northern and west ern North Dakota. The Great Northern Railway is building a number of new extensions from its main line northward notably that of the Sarlesextention ofthe Edmore line, the Thorne exten- sion running north from York, | the Maxbass extension running‘ northwestward from Towner,: and a further extension of the Westhope line to Antler. The building of these new lines has brought into being a number of new towns which are fully described in a pamphlet re- cently issued by the Great Northern Railway. By applica- tion to Mr. F., I.
