By reason of the enterprise, persistence and hard work of the ladies of this city Bemidji hasa public hbrary of very satisfac- tory proportions and of very general utility. That. it is most desirable that the library shall be maintained and increased in size and usefvlness is freely ad- mitted by all. - It is well to remember, how- ever, that the library now de- pends entirely for its support up- legal standing: should the ladies for any reason, the library would have absolutely no means of support. The present arrange- ment by reason of unremitqing_l care on the part of the ladies proved fairly satisfactory bu have to face the fact that the rary cannot be made a perma- nent institution unless it is eventually taken charge of by the city. There is a law which provides for the organization in cities of al library board and the mainte- nance of a public library by taxa- tion. The Bemidji public lib- rary must ultimately be support- ed in this way—and the sooner the better. But Bemidji must first get to be a city, and this is one additional argument, though of course far from the most im- portant, for city organization at | the eariiest possible moment.
