MONTANA is comingin fora big share of the general prosper- ity of the couuntry, and it will only be a few short years when she will rank with any of the North- western states in agricultural greatness. We guess this is going some. Thief River may never build a court house but it is building brick blocks right along and velopement of this section as the needs grow apace. Already the agricultural worth of this to be famous valley has been adequate- ly demonstrated in the results which have followed the irriga- tion works already established. It has been successfully proven that all kinds of agriculiural pro- ducts grow in great abundance whergyer irrigation is used. The soil is naturally rich and needs only moisture to make it yield prolifically. The Great North- ern Railway furnishes adequate transportation facilities, its main line practically cutting the valley in two. The fact that the Gov- ernment has decided to begin immediate operations will prove a great incentive to the people of that section who have always be- lieved in the future of their coun- try and will open to settlement avast area of richland to the homeseeker and investor. Drainage Plans. THE state drainage commission which was saved alive from the ravages of the new code only by the most vigorous efforts held its first meceting to prepare for the work of the season at St. Paul this week. George A, Ralph of Crookston will be retained as the engineer of the commission for the ensuing two years, thus giv ing the state the services of an experienced engineer and of a man who has madea detailed study of the drainage needs of the state. The commission has $30,000 available for ditches this year as well as an appropriation for making a complete drainage survey of the state. Ditches will beconstructed only where state lands may be benefitted as this of courseis the ostensible pur- pose for which the commission exists, butin every casz private lands are also greatly benefitted and every ditch is a material help in the general development of the state. Census Enumerators. THE work of selecting the cen- sus enumerators is now under way, the positions being purely political ones and the selection of the enumerators being left by the secretary of state to senators and representatives of each dis- trict. These in most cases have joined with them in the task of naming the enumerators the chairmen of the county commit- tees. The enumerators will be paid $2.50 for each 100 names and the securing of 100 names with the information that goes with it will be no light task. Howeyer the enumerators will make good wages and the positions are be- ing eagerly sought after. Mill Wood for Sale. WHAT THEY SAY P. J. OLeary: “As to the early closing proposition, it is my opinion that the stores of the city should close at 6 d’clock in the evening during the summer menths, except on Saturday and mill pay days.” Attorney Frank F. Price: “I have practiced in nearly every county in Minnesota, but for fair upright decisions I have never found any judges on the bench that ‘quite come up to Judges Spooner and McClennahan. The people of the Fifteenth judicial dis- trict are to be congratulated on having men like Spooner and McClennahan as district judges.” Citizen: “It seems to me that the city council should take action to have the lake shore cleaned up, A small amount of money expended judiciously in beautifying the beach from the Third street dock to Diamond Point would increase the attrac- tiveness of the city to a great ex- tent.” E.
