Thompson, president of the state uniyersity of Ohio who vyisited Superintendent of Public Instruction Olson and Governor Johnson last week had the following to say regarding Minnesota's cducational work. “Minnesota’s fame along educational lines is no less in the east than in the west. The state has a splendid cducational system that ranks among the highest in the country, The univer sity and the state agricul- ural school are classed as models of their kind. The eastern states spend less money for educational pur- poses than Minnesota, and consequencly cannot com- pare with your institutions. Eastern legislators become legthargic when educational measures come up. It was for example only a compara- tively few years ago that high schools were establish- ed in New York state. Ohio is making a strong fight for better educational features and we expect to compare favorably with Minnesota in future years,” Such a tribute from a gentle- man of standing as an educator as Dr. Thompson is of more than passing moment. It is one of the best advertisements a state could receive and should be given all the publicity possible by the press of the state. Should Bring Pressure. THE Stephens drainage bill which is a reenactment of the Grindeland drainage law with some important additions that are of great importance to this section of the state has passed {he house. The several mem- bers from the Twin cities and Daluth, however, voted with the representatives from this sec- tion and saved the day. The bill is very likely to pass the senate and the only question now is whether the appropriation car- ried with it will be so small as to practically nullify the provisions it contains. A $25,000 appropriation would make it necessary to confine the work to afew small ditches. Pressure should be brought to bear in every direction possible by the people of the northern part of the state to secure a decent ap- propriation for drainage work.— Crookston Times. Very Yellow Journalism. IN YESTERDAY morning’s Min- neapolis Tribune appeared a long in Bemidji, the death of one man as a result and the critieal illness of another. The story appeared with a Crookston date line. The story is untrue in every particular and circumstances go to show that the writer knew that it was untrue but deliber- ately slandered this city for the sake of gefting a sensational story into the Twin City papers. Bemidji has been injured use. lessly in this way more than once. Because this city is the gateway for the northern Min- nesota lumberman and logger unscruplous correspondenfis are| making use of the city as aloc& tion for every wild story they can impose upon the big daily papers they represent. Wants One School House. To the Pioneer: Taking advantage of the Pio- neer as offering its columns for use of discussing the building of one or more additional school rooms, I shall try and state my opinion and what I have wished to say both to the board of educa- tion and to the public. The bonds to be issued, mean of course an additional debt of $10,000 and an additional increase in taxes and every citizen wishes to see the money properly used to suit pre- sent conditions and possibilities in future. Ten thousand dollars seem to be a lot of money but|; when we try to build one or more school houses with the money, the amount looks very small to me and if any of the school board are barboring the thought of building two school buildings with the ten thousand dollars I beg of them to think it over again. If we build one school house with the money we may purchase the site and bvild a six or seven room school house of brick, fire- proof and modern in every re- spect, if building two school houses, we would have two frame buildings inconvenient in many ways and probably, by future in- crease of pupils, they would be worthless tous. I have heard that the Catholic church and four lots have been offered to the board of education for $1500. It seems as if bought this would se |- cure us the cheapest school house and site we could possibly buy and would be the best location we could select as a central school site. —T. Johnson. Cheated Death. Kidney trouble often ends fatally, but by choosing the right medicine, E. H. Wolfe, of Bear|} Grove, Iowa, cheated death. He says: “Two years ago I had kid- ney trouble, which caused me great pain, suffering and anxiety, Lbut I took Electric Bitters, which effected a complete cure. I have also found them of great benefit in general debility and nerve trouble, and keep them constant- ly on hand, si nce, as I find they ha Reputation as the Rose City During Exposition. School children of Portland have taken into their hands the problem of making the Rose City look presentable during the Lewis and Clark Exposition on from June 1 to October 15 next, Over 2,000 are already enrolled in the prize yard cleaning and fiower-planting contests which hove been inaugurated by the civic improvement board of the Chamber of Commerce. Portland’s reputation as the Rose City will be abundantly sustained during the Exposition for, in addition to tha thousands of roses that now blossom in all of the residence districts, 10,000 additional rose bushes will be distributed free to all who desire them. Portland, which will be the most conspicous city in the Unit- ed States this summer on account of the Lewrs and Clark Exposi- tion and will attract thousands of visitors from the East, has al- ready won a name as one of the most beautiful cities in the Unit- ed States. The city is built on a prairie, on both sides of the hills of the Cascades closing in on its suburbs, and four snowpeaks punctuating the horizon. $100 Reward, $100.
