I take the pleasurein submit: ting to the public .my report of Bemidji Public Schools, for -the The total entollment has now passed the seven hundred line by a considerable margin; Tke average attendance has fallen off to s"meextent. Thisisespecially noticeable in ‘the lower grades and can be accounted for by the cold weather which prevailed during the month. We are con- strained to believe, that many cases of absence could haye been’ avoided. The lowest ayerage reached in any room was 86 per cent, the highest was 96 7-10 per cent. Tardiness still holds on with a tenacious grip. Ocre hundred-two cases being reported for the month. P:Lrents, why canhot this conditions be eradicated? It is true, as usual, that cases of tardiness can be traced to a com- paratively few pupils and fewer ; homes. The demon, truancy is still in our midst; five cases being-re- ported. This is one of the hard- est propositions we haye to meet. Parents could do a great deal to- ward putting an end to this by icarefully reading and examining the report cards before signing. This is a matter of no small im- port and should be carefully look- ed into by parents as well as teachers. Truancy is almost en- tirely confined to the’ boys and upon examination you will find that nearly every truant is a tohacco user in one form or an- other. It is sad but nevertheless true that some one in town fur- nishes tobaccos to school child- ren. It would be well for that party or parties to look up.the school law on that point and gov- ern themselves accordingly. We are glad to notice that the number of visitors during Jan- uary increased to 62. This is a good sign: we hope you will con- tinue to swell the list. Some one asked why we do not institute a visiting day. The rea- son to my mind is obvious—par- ents would not see the school as itis. On the whole, the school is in good working condition and we think we can réport progress along nearly every line. It has decided to graduate the members from the eight grade who satisfactorily complete the work prescribed for them. We think there will be a class of at least twenty who will have com- pleted the entire course. hoped that all members will en- ter the High School next year. Respectfully, —A. P. Ritchie.
