FIVE BEARS IN ONE HOLE| She B’ear and Four Cubs Found in a Den Near Blackduck by Farmers. Chas. Angel apd John Miller, two farmers who live near Black- duck, on February 3 came upon northeast of that city and upon examination of the hole found that it contained a large she bear and four cubs. The old bear was quickly dispatched and the small oncs were captured and taken to Blackduck, where they were disposed of. The trial of George Connors, accused of burglary, will take place before Judge Pendergast Friday afternoon. Connors is charged with haying entered the house of George Greenfield, a farmer who lives a short distance from Buena Vista, and taken a watch and chain, afterwards coming to Bemidji, where he was arrested by Sheriff Bailey. The accused man says that he merely took the watch to use during the time his own timepiece was ina jewelry store in this city for re- pairs. s + J. Manley, former chairman of the na- tional executive committee of the Re- |} publican party, died suddenly at his |3 home here during the day. Mr. Man- ley was sixty-two years of age. had not been in good health for sev- eral years, hut his death was not con- i sidered imminent. GOMPERS’ CLOTHES UNION MADE. Delegate to Tailors’ Convention Seeks Information. Bloomington, 1il., Feb. Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation of labor, fin- ished a speech of thirty-two minutes to the national convention of tailors Dele- gate llerman Nepus of Pittsburg arose and said that there was some doubt as to whether Mr. Gompers was wearing clothes with the union label and moved that a committee be appointed to in- vestigate. The motion caused a storm of protest, but Mr. Gompers quieted the delegates and suggested to the convention that Nepus be appointed a committee of one to investizgate. The convention shouted its approval and Gompers advanced to the front of the platform and, pointing to Nepus, urged him to come forward, at the same time opening his coat as if to display the label. Nepus remained in his seat and the delegates yelled in derision. Mr. Gompers then acknowledged that every article of clothing that he wore bore the union label. 8.—When KOCH TRIAL ON APRIL 1. Three People Drowhed Near Mount Holly, N. J. Mount Holly, N. J., Feb. 8.—Shinn | O. Ballinger and wife and the latter’s sister, Miss Mary Tavior of Medford, N. J,, were drowned +m a mill pond near here during the afternoon. They started to cross the pond when the ice gayve way under them and they dis- appedred in deep water.
