: ] ] | | SCORES THE RAILROADS Attorney Henry Funkley Says Rates Are Prohibitive to Farmers. SHIPPING OF W0OD TO NORTH DAKOTA NOT PROFITABLE. Effort Will Be Made to Induce Railroad and Warehouse Com- mission to Intevene. “If reasonable rates could be secured from the railroads which control the traffic of cordwood from points on the line of the M. & I. north of Bemidji to North Dakota, the farmers who own farms in the north country could make a profitable thing out of the business,”” said Attorney Henry Funkley of Bemidji this morning. “But as it is now,” continued Mr. Funkley, “there is no way in which enough can be realized from the business to even repay the farmer for his trouble and experise in cutting, hauling and loading the wood on to the cars. It is a shame that the thousands of cords of birch wood standing allalong the M. & I. tracksin the vicinity of Blackduck, Tenstrike and Kelliher can not be cut and shipped to the western prairies at a reasonable profit to the poor settlers who are trying with all their might to develop the coun- try, but it seems that unless strenuous measures are employ- ed to bring about a change in the price of transportation the trees will be left standing until all the pine is cut, for when this is accomplished there is eyery profrability that a fire will occur and destroy the hundreds upon thousands of dollars worth of wood uncut.” An investigation of Mr. Funk- ley’s statement leads one to think in a measure as he does. From Blackduck to Bemidji and from Kelliher to Bemidji the rate for birch wood is three cents per hundred pounds. From Bemidji to Grand Forks over the Great Northern the rate per hundred is five and one-half cents, mak- ing a total of eight and one-half cents for transportation of a hun- dred pounds ef fuel from either of the north line towns to Grand Forks. A cord of dry birch wood weighs approximately 38,500 and a cord of green wood is taken at 5,000 pounds. Thus it will be seen that the shipment of one cord of wood would cost $4.25 for green and $3.00 for dry wood. Placing the expense of “cutting, hauling, loading the wood onto the cars.and unloading it at its destination at $3.50, it will be seen that the cost of taking the fuel from the woods to the mar- ket is §$7.75 for the green wood and $6.50 for for the dry. The price paid for this fuel in Grand Forks is about $9.00 a cord. Some will notice by the- above that the profit on a cord of dry wood is larger than upon the same amount of green and ask why PRINCESS Grocery Co. This ques- tion is easily answered by the fact that yery few of the home- steaders who own lands in the upper country have enough capi- tal to cut the wood and then wait for a year before it is in a condi- tion to be shipped as such and to beaccepted by the purchasers as dry fuel. It is very probable that the matter will be taken up in the near future with the railroad and warehouse commission and an application for a lowering of the rates asked for.
