Under this caption the Duluth News Tribune points a moral in the matter of drainage which should make every man in north- ern Minnesota the more zealous for the cause of drainage. We are glad to quote the editorial in full: Eight state ditches have been completed in Minnesota this year, several of which had been commenced last year. The drain- age expenditure for two years has been $50,000, the drainage commission having gone to the limit with available funds. The ditches constructed have made important links in the drainage system of the Northwestern part of the state and thousands of acres of worthless lands have been made ready for the plough. Of these ditches the cheapest one to be constructed—cheapest in the history of state ditching— lies a few miles north of Bemidji. Here was a large tract of timber- less swamp known as the “Big Meadows.” Grass grew raok thereon, but the presence of standing water has heretofore prevented the gathering of much hay. Five thousand acres was embraced in this soaked tract, of which nearly two thousand acres belonged to the state. This sum- mer a five-mile ditch was driven through the “Big Meadows,”’ at a cost of $500 per mile. For each acre reclaimed on the “Big Meadows” fifty cents were expended. The cost was small— so was the result; butas a real example of drainage benefit, the “Big Meadow ditch” is great in importance." It affords a practical example on a small scale of what should be practiced on a large scale in every swamp district of the state. Last year there wasan un- profitable morass north of a thriving town, a swamp of uncer- tain and speculative value. This year there lies in its place a well-drained meadow, offering 160-acre homes to thirty-one families, and an expanded market to the merchants of Bemidji and those of the state. Last year the state owned two Crystal and Gold, and Souvenir, Table and Limo Berry Sets. This year the sameland can be readily sold at a price four times greater than the total sum ex- pended in building the five mile ditch, This result, this transforma- tion, has been brought about by the adoption of simple business methods of the state land depart- ment, When the state gets be- yond common fractions in its arithmetic lessons, itewill multi- ply thousands of dollars for drainage work where it now adds mvvmvvmv ‘i World’s Fair Prize. Are Chiropractio Adjustments the same &.s Osteopath Treatments? No. The Chiropractic and the Osteopath both aim to put in place that which is out of place, to right that which is wrong; but the Path- ology Diagnosis, Prognosis and Movements are entirely different. One of my patients, Mr. W. A. Casler, has taken both Chiropractic and Osteopoth treatments. The Chiropractic is ten times more direct in the adjustments and the results getting health ten times more thor- ough in one tenth of the time than an Osteopath would. cents, There are hundreds of “Big Meadow’” problems for the state to solve in St. Louis, Beltrami and Itasca counties. ms NORTH b EROM | COUNTRY Al i 0 ol B B B Gray Eagle will get itself elec- tric lights. —— The daily serial from New Ulm is getting old. —0— Curfew has tolled for the ho- boes of Belle Prairie, —0— The Granite Falls Tribune voices what are probably Broth- er Verity’s real sentiments when it declares that there is more satisfaction inbeing a benedict, “ Pillsbury’s Best ” Sets the Pace for Flour Excellence the world over. Here is a,chance for procrastination to make a big haul. l Little Chapters From Life I The Disputatious Preacher. It takes competition to make things go. A few years ago there was but one lone church member in all the thriving village of Northland, Buta Methodist man came to town and organized another church and the Congre gationalists woke up right away and got busy. Now they have both got new churches and plenty of-members. The pastor of the Congrega- tional church is abig man with a small voice and a tremendous love of fighting. He has a way of keeping the people for an af- ter meeting and inviting them to find fault with the sermon right then and there or forever after hold their peace. Some of the flock are getting so they can put up a very pretty fight to the pas- tor. found who wants to take the pastor out on the railroad track and have it out alonewith him but the pastor is wary in the way death and salvation are settled right in the midst of the congre- gation. But although the pastor is always spoiling for a fight, he knows when to run away. He frankly relates how on a former charge where about eyery man in the church was a separate denomination unto himself he once held an affer meeting and the discussion upon kittle points of doctrine finally reached the point where sisters matched tongue against tongue and Once in a while a member is & and the doctrines of life and |} preacher with his small voice voice was not in it a little bit so he mounted’ the pulpit and sum- moning every breathin his body he shouted: “Beloved, I perceive that there are more preachers here than people and I am fain to Believe that I really am not needed. Permit me to cast myself into the outer darkness.” And he went out into the night by the back door. But the after meetings in Northland have not progressed to this stage of development as yet, and a visit to the church of a Sunday evening is well worth while. The preacher sits in the middle of a wide platform with a big stick with which he lays down the law of time for choir and congregation in regular rythmatic thuds. On his left handis a quartette of bearded men and on his right four boys, barely more than babes. These nine make the choir and their singing is good to hear. There were times in the early days when people were wont to inquire, “Can any good thing come out of Northland?” That timeis long past, Notice.
