HITCHCOCK. “mwred In the postoffice at Bemid)i, Minn, as second class matter, Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR A Double Tribute to Dunn. Last evening Senator Nelson at Crookston and John Lind at Bemidji united in paying a re- markable tribute to Robert -C. Dunn, rej ublican candidate for governor. Senator Nelson being a republican was free to tell the whole truth, while Mr. Lind, beinga democrat, felt constrained to make some small exception and so said that Mr. a splendid man and an able offi- cial, but “reckless.” Senator Nelson paid a glowing tribute to Mr. Dunn as the most efficient state official Minnesota has ever had. He said, in brief, that the dem- ocrats, having no eartkly show of carrying the state for Parker, had of the strenuous republican convention and were turning heaven and earth to defeat R. C. Dunn for goyernor. He referred to the fact that they have no pretense of an issue, and therefore de- voted their entire energies toa personal attack on Mr. Dunn. Dunn was taken advantage thing in the stateagainst the timber hogs, and that he had made a splendid record in view of the fact that when he was elected ctate audi- tor timbercatting permits issued by his predecessor were in the hands of the lumbermen. While these were illegal, yet the state supreme court had held that|aA tresspassers, under them could be held for the actual value of double and triple penalty provid- ed by law, which Dunn had been censured for not collecting. Senator Nelson next spoke of Dunn’s splendid record in draft- ing and securing the passage of measures safeguarding “the tim- ber interests of the state, and the success he had in prosecuting a number of big cases against the lumbermen. The speaker said he believed thoroughly that Mr. Dunn had made the best possis| ble settlements in every case. 1n passing Senator Nelson also toolt occasion to refer to his per- sonal knowledge of Mr. Dunn’s |} personal ¢haracter. was one of the most straightfor- ward, honest and upright men litical record would bear the closest scrutiny. He referred to him as of the same type of man as President Roosevelt, lacking the polish of the president but lacking in none of the essential - qualities of the pational leader as a standard bearer of the republican party in Minnesota. He.said that Mr. Dunn -was entitled to the en- thusiastic support of every re- publican in the state, and called attention to the fact that not un- til more than 18 months after Mr. Dunn’s retirement as state auditor had there been evena whisper of anything wrong in his official acts.
