HITCHCOCK. “ntered in the postoffice at BemldJi, Minn., as second class matter. Oificial County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Least We Forget. Inthe midst of so much per- sonal political discussion the peo- ple of Minnesota should not for- get that they have several very important impersonal questions to settle at the election next month, The proposed constitu- tional amendments deserve the careful consideration of every voter. And it must be remem- bered that however much we may favor the amendments, if we do not vote for them, they will not carry, for the constitu- tion requires an affirmative ma- jority of all the votes |cast atan election to carry an amendment The Pioneer believes that each of the proposed amendments should pass, but it will be a lamentable thing if the gross earnings amendment fails. . When you go to the voting booth be sure to put an X after “Yes” for theamend- ment to increase the gross earn- ings tax on railroads from three to four per cent, Let the rail- roads pay their share of the state’s taxes. Thisis the first plank in the strong platform announced by Hon. R. C. Dunn, republican candidate for governor, Against The Goverment. The only reason that the demo- cratic candidate for governor has offered why he should be elected in Minnesota this year, is that he stands against every policy of the state; that it is time to aban- don all of the policies which have made the state great, and to in- augurate a system of do-nothing, a system of which Mr. Johnson has been aconspicuous advocate for several years past. Mr. Johnson ridicules the ne- cessity of good roads, declares that state drainage benefits no- body but the railroads, favors the abolution of the board of control, records his vote and his voice against every measure passed by by the state for the veterans of the Civiland Spanish wars and looks hard at every other propo- sition to which the state has successfully committed itself during the past ten years. If the people of Minnesota be- lieve that itis time for the state to abandon these great policies, they should by all means vote for Mr. Johnson. THE war in the east s ho long- er a war, but wholesale, awful murder. Russia has been whipped a hundred times over. It is time that the nations of the world interferred and put an end to the awful slaughter which is serving no good purpose what- ever. If the war continues a month longer, a year longer, it will mean simply the loss of thousands of lives—the result will be the same. THE Crookston Times is issu- ing a twelve page daily these days, brim full of news and ad- vertisement, both of which tes- tify eloquently of the solid pros- perity of Crookston and the en- terprise of the Times, both of which area mark for the best efforts of any small city in the United States. Cause of Lockjaw. = Lockjaw, or tetanus, is caused by a bacillus or germ which ex- ists plentifully in street dirt. It is inactive so long as exposed to the air, but when carried beneath the skin, as in the wounds caused by percussion caps or by rusty nails, and when the air is ex- cluded the germ is roused to ac- tivity and produces the most vir- ulent poison known. These germs may be destroyed and all danger of lockjaw avoided by ap- plying Chamberlain’s Pain Balm freely as soon as the injury is received.
