HITCHCOCK. {ntered in the postoffice at BemidJi, Minn,, as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR One Way It Works. The primary law works divers and sundry ways, and some of them are fearful and wonderful ways. The republican nominee for county attorney in Norman coun- ty isNels T. Moen. Eyer hear of Nels? No? Well, such is fame. Nevertheless 883 of us here in Beltrami county voted for him as the populist candi- date for congress from this great Ninth congressional district only twoyearsago, anda good many more hundreds of us listened to the peppery populist speeches which he made from one end of the district to the other. And today the man who was death on the republican party two years ago and wanted to be elected to congress that he might help to hold the wickedness of the re- publican party in check, today this man js a republican candi- date for county attorney. Two years ago he denounced the re- publican party and all its works; today he is a republican candi- date for an important office, We have heard that there are those who say the primary law does not disrupt political parties; maybe it does not, but it looks a tolerable lot like it. WHEELOCK’S WEEKLY, one of the influential papers of the ninth district, devotes a leading editorial to the primary law and after alleging a long bill of par- ticulars against the law it malkes the following good point: Again, the lack of a conven- tion or other party machin- ery almost ends the possibli- tie of any candidates except those of the leading party, The healthy contest, one party against another, and the option offered voters to select the good candidate of opposing party when their own is objectionable, is end- ed for all time—till the sys- tem is changed. The primary election has too many good points to dis- card it entlrelv, but the law should be radically amended. The law is of course nothing more than an experiment in Min- nesota and the twotests ithas been given bring forth these criticisms which are just what are needed to mould the law-into its proper form. SENATOR CLAPP’S re-election seems pretty well assured, The gubernatorial campaign settled that and the partizans of Judge Collins really did it. Not because they wanted to, but because they wanted to force Clapp’s friends to their support. The fact of the matter is that the Collins’ leaders had, and have yet, a candidate to succeed Sena- tor Clapp—and that candidate is not Senator Clapp. He is one Tom Lowry of Hennepin. But in their anxiety to defeat Dunn they have defeated Lowry also— and they really wanted Lowry much more than they did Collins. Mr. Lowry will not go to the sen- ate next year—he will not even stand a chance of going and he has only his friends to thank for it. OvER near Chaska one Mr. Splettstoesser has promised to let himself loose <as a candidate for . county auditor. If thereis anything ina name Mr. Spet- tstoesser ought to snow his op- ponent pretty far under. He has most of the alphabet at his ‘| disposal. It vo’ies prove anythmg, Bel- unty has POp! Wouldn’t that stick you? —o— We are not all as frank as the Mallard Call which says, “Thank God for the primary election law. May it exist as long as we are in the newspaper business.” —0— If it had not been that so many hundreds of the boys were away in the harvest fields of the Dako- tas, Beltrami county would have had votes enough to stock the state. BRI Itasca county is one place where the democrats are not dead yet and by grace of their votes Mr. Spear will again be a republican candidate for county attorney. —0— Mr. Valentine wants to be a judge and with the judges stand in the place of Judge Baxter, but the people of the district refuse to take him seriously and insist that he is just a comic Valentine.
