Bemidji has reached the point where it needs a library building in which to house its steadily growing library. Although the Library Association was organ- ized by the ladies of Bemidji less than a year ago, its success has been pronounced and the foun- dation for a splendid library has been laid. The library should have a home of its own, and Be- midji can doubtful secure a Caxr- negie library if it cares to apply for one. Now is the time to take the matter up for even with earn- est work at once it will be many months before the appropriation can be secured and work begun When Bemidji does secure a li- brary building it is to be hoped that the disgraceful quarreling which has marked the experience of several other northern Minne- sota towns as to.the location of the institution will be spared us. After months of wrangling and just as work is about to be begun on the fine new Carnegie library for Crookston an injunction is se- cured restraining the council from proceeding further in the matter because some citizen is not pleased with the site selected. Crookston does not deserve to have a library building—much less to haye one given to it. THE St. Cloud Times is not al- together pleased with the pri- mary law and makes the follow- ing caustic criticism of it: 1t must be confessed that the primary election law is far from satisfactory. It should be either perfected or repealed. The judgement of one of the ablestattorneys in the state that it should be en- titled, “An Act to Prevent the People From Having Any Choice in the Selection of Candidates,” is not wholly in error. Under the convention system candidates needed the suppors of a majority of the delegates. Under the pri- mary law any man who has the price of a filing fee can get on the primary ticket, and oftimes crowds off better men, It destroys the old theory that the office should seek the man and not the man the office. The law is coming in for a good deal of cursing just now and it is just as well that a few months are to elapse before any attempt can be made to appeal or amend it. |} TuE democrats are in luck in Minnesota this year. All they have to dois to gather up the ammunition which the mug- wumps labor so seriously—at the state’s expense—to provide. It is pretty poor soré of ammuni- tion, but what can you expect of anything so cheap? A MUD slinging campaign al- ways comes high, but if you feel able to afford it and must have one, let us. commend you to the Minneapolis Journal. Ir Beltrami couaty had as many voters as cast votes at the primary election it would have a lot more voters than it has.
