FREAK OF THE LAW Primary Law Works Very Differently in Cass and Clearwater Counties. NO END OF CANDIDATES IN CLEARWATER COUNTY. In Cass County Candidates How- ever, Appear to Have no Opposition. Two of Beltrami’s neighboring counties which are having yery dissimilar experiences with the primary law are Clearwater and Cass. In Clearwater there is a new candidate for some office every half hour and sometimes every fifteen minutes. Just before we went to press there were fifty-one candidates for the various oflices in the infant county to the west of us but by the time this is read there may be many more. Seven candidates have filed for sheriff alone in Clearwater and the single town of Leon furnishes five candi- | dates for different offices. In Cass county on the other hand there is almost no contest at all. The present county officers have filed for renomination and there isno one to dispute with them. Sheriff Hardy has an opponent in Jake Johnsonof Cass Lake and John King chairman of the board of county commissioners is hav ing to dispute the title to his seat with Mine Host J. B. Spencer. There is also a little difference of opinion between J. S. Scribner of Walker and L. M. Lange as to who shall be the republican nomi- nee for judge of probate. Other- wise there is nothing doing in the primary election in Cass county, One clearwater county newspaper is said to have col- lected over $400 for political an- nouncements alone and the county is literally paved with campaign cards. In Cass county, however, the newspapers can’t get within range of a candidate with a telescope. It is said that there will bea number of filings by independent candidates in Cass county and that the election will not prove so tame an affair as the primary. Rev. A, E. Evans ministers to the spiritual needs of the people of Tenstrike, Buena Vista and Ralph. Mr. Evans is as brown as a nut and his parishioners find him as full of meat whether in pulpiti or in his every day mini- strations to their needs. He preaches each Sunday at Ten- strike and alternately each Sun- day at Buena Vista and Ralph. Mr. Evans owns no horse but travels on foot straight through the woods tohis differentcharges. Some weeks he is compelled to travel as high as one hundred miles and his weekly walking averages ab least i Few men of anv oce vel so much a-foot as does Mr. Evansandthough many ministers of the Gospel doubtless are as full of labors as is Mr. Evans, yet the spectacle of a preacher who wallts so far each week to carry the Gospel to his people is certainly unique. Mr. Evans is an ear estan able 7! man and is doing a great work in his chosen field. He is the picture of health, but the unusual amount of physical wearinenss which he must meet cach week up hill and down hill, over slow sandy roads, through the tangled thicket is undoubtedly telling on him, !|Has Sold a Pile of Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy. The two games of base ball which will be played on the local field between the Big Duluths and Bemidji will without a doubt be the fastest exhibitions of ball playing ever seen by the people of the city during tlLe present scason. The Bemidji aggrega- tion will be strengthened for the games by the addition of one or two outside players, and Louis Roy, who was injured some time ago, will also take part in the games. The management ex- pects a good turnout from the people of Bemidji, as it is under very heavy expense in securing the Big Duluth team. POLITICS Concerning the canvass for the nomination for superintendent of schools the Blackduck Times says: Chief among the impor- tant offices to be considered by the voters at the coming primar ies1s that of suporintendent of schools, An enormous amount . |of money is being paid each year by the tax payers for their sup- port and it is only right and just that they should demand of the officer entrusted with their care some return for this generous outlay of money. The peopleare fortunate in having an opportun ity this year to yote foi a man who ranks high among the edu- cators of our state. A conscien- tious and untiring worker who understands every detail of the school work and posesses all the superintendent. We refer to J. neers of our county and we hope his name at the primaries. Attorney John F.Gibbons’ can- vass for the republican nomina- tion for county attorney is meet- ing with increasing favor through out the county. Wherever he is known Mr. Gibbons has hosts of friends and they are all busy placing his qualifications before those who do not know him. But Mr. Gibbons is not going upon the theory that his friends are going to do it all. . He is sparing no time or pains to give every voter an opportunity to judge for himself whether he ought to be elected county attorney. Mr. Gibbons is urging no one to vote for him or to work for him but he is doing his best to let every one know what qualifications he has leaving the matter of the final choice to each individual voter to settle for himself. A desperate effort is being made by Mr. Hays, who publishes a politicalpaper, to make it ap- pear that the Scandinavians of the county are being maligned, insulted and kicked about gener- ally, wherefore argues Mr, Hays the Scandinavians should stand together to a man and vote for the men whom Mr. Hays has picked out. The Scandinavians, like the Germans, the French- wen and all other Americans, will vote pretty much as they please, however, being fond of nominating and electing the men they think best and not the men some other fellow thinks best. When a man bas to appeal to race prejudice to support his cause he must have a pretty weak cause. In another column will be found the announcement of Rich- ard Leet of Wilton for county treasurer. Mr. Leetis a young g man who has been located at var ious points in the county during the past few years and hails at present from Wilton. He is an energetic hustling young man and is making an active canvass for the nomination. His ability and integrity are unquestioned.
