Entered In the postoffice at Bemidjl, Minn., as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Wanted-- A Man Who Does Things. The people of this or any other legislatiye district need a man at St. Paul who is in the habit of do- ing things. It is for this reason the Pioneer does not feel that it can urge the people of Beltrami county to vote for Mr, L. C. Sim- ons who is a candidate for re- nomination. Mr. Simons has spent one winter at St. Paul re- presenting the 6lst legislative district and the only thing which he did there to attract the gen- eral attention to himself was to labor earnestly for the passage of the infamous sugar bounty bill. Fortunately his efforts in this respect were crowned with failure. We haye an opportun- ity this fall to nominate and elect a man who is in the habit of do- ing things and it would seem the part of wisdom to send such a man to the legislature from this district this winter. That man is Lewis L. Mayland of Clear- water, a gentleman who is well known in his own county as a man of force and ability with a reputatian for carrying to a suc- cessful conclusion whatever he attempts, He is an enthusiastic advocate of drainage and a care- ful student of that subject which is certainly the subject above all other which the people of north- ern Minnesota want legislation Dr. Mayland has had the courage to frankly announce his upon. views on public questions and no man who has not the courage to state his views in advance of the nomination is entitled to the suffrages of the people. For drainage, good roads and the re-election of Senator Clapp,”’ is Dr. Mayland’s platform. If we mistake not the most of the people of Beltrami county are standing on the same platform. RoserT C. DUNN is the most popular man that the republicans of Minnesota ever nominated for governor. True he has some very, very bitter enemies and we have noticed that all men who are worth enough to become popular have very, very bitier enemies. Van Sant, universally regarded as a weak candidate beat John Lind, the most popular nominee that the democrats ever had in this state. What will Bob Dunn, a man who is popular and strong with all the parties, do against Mr. Johnson, who is con- paratively unknown and who can- not be reckoned for a moment within miles of Lind for popular- ity? No wonder Dunn’s election is predicted by the largest ma- Jority ever given to a candidate for governor in this state, A Goop many have said that Beltrami can never become an agricultural county. Itis anotice- able fact, that is without excep- tion, however, that those who say this are those who know Bel- trami county simply by reputa- tion as a place where pine logs come from. Any man who has spent a day in dri‘\"mg over any part of the county knows that it contains some of the finest farming land in the state. The only idea some people haye of a farm is a treeless plain where wheat will grow for a few years without planting. Itis perfectly true that Beltrami will never have any farms of this kind, but Territory and machines for sale it will have hundreds in a few years thaf will be much better. But we appreciate the delicate flattery of the Tribune in insinu- ating that we’ve got so much. —0— A candidate withdrew in Mar- shall county at the last minute and the Stephens Leader insinu- ates that it said so many nice things about it that he must have thought himself too good for the place: —0— Looking oyer the political field in northern Minnesota Mary Mec- minds them that “Only the young and bumptious are always positive.” | AMUSEMENTS I Never before in the history of the Amusement business has there been such ademand for specialties in theatrical perform- ances—realizing this Messrs.
