A meeting of the fire depart- ment was hcll last night at the city hall. Matters of importance were discussed and John Wash- burn was elected secretary to fill the vacancy caused by the de- parture of Harvey Woodward. Governor La Follette Names Wiscon- £ sin State Treasurer. Madison, Wis., Sept. 1l.—Governor La Follette has appointed Thomas Pur- tell temporary state treasurer to act until a permanent appointment can bhe made. For several years Purtell has been duputy state treasurer. The ap- pointment is for the purpose of reopen- ing the treasury as soon as checking of accounts is finished, which will be in a couple of days. Purtell will give bond in the sum of $100,000, but the to give a bond of $600,000, which was the amount of bond demanded of de- posed State Treasurer John J. Kempf. The latter declines to say whether he will oppose the reopening of the treasury. ATTEMPT TO WRECK TRAIN. Engineer Barely Discovers Obstruction in Time. Grand Island, Neb., Sept. 1.—An at- tempt was made during the night at the north end of the bridge over the South canal of the Platte river to wreck an incoming passenger train on the Union Pacific. Running at full speed the engineer noticed some ob- struction and saw a man leaving the bridge. He brought the train to a stop before any damage resulted, further than to raise one truck off the track. A new piling was found lodged under the engine. It is the second attempt of the kind in the same vicinity within thirty days. Triple Tragedy in Arkansas, Stephens, Ark.,, Sept. 1.—A triple tragedy occurred near Mount Holly, Union county, Tuesday, in which one white man and two negroes were shot to death. Details are very meagre, but it is said that two negroes insult- ed a white woman. A mob went out on a hunt for the negroes with the re- sult that a white man, a stranger named Stover, together with a negro man and a woman, were killed. Indiana Populist Convention, Indianapolis, Sept. 1.—Indiana Pop- ulists ‘who oppose fusion met during the day in state convention to place a ticket in the field.
