PIONEER PUBLISHING CO0. By R. W. HITCHCOCK. Rntered in the postoffice at Bemidji: Minn., as second elass matter. Offieial County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR Dunn’s Cinch. Robert C. Dunn will be the next governor of Minnesota if he lives until January 1, 1905. Of this no one who knows anything of past and presert conditions in Minnesota can for one moment doubt. Minunesota is a reliably republican state; Dunn is enor- mously popular with all parties; no state official ever had a better record; this is presidential year; and last but not least, the popu- list strongholds of the past are today almost solidly republican. This last named fact is most significant. Take the banner populist county of Polk. Six years ago it give the populist candidates majorities of 2000 and upward, and in manry townships not a single republican vote was cast. Four years ago it gave the populist nominees about 700 the best of it. Two years ago it was nip and tuck. This year with the day for filings almost upon us not one populist can be found in the entire county with the tem- erity to file as a candidate for office. What wonder we predict the largest majority ever given a candidate for governor in Minne- sota for Mr. Dunn next Novem- ber? Drainage. To the people of northern Min- nesota the most important ques- tion to be discussed and decided by the legislature next winter is that of drainage. For the past four years the state has contrib- uted $25,000 per year for the drainage of state lands, and the state lands so drained have been increased in value so that the state has reaped a profit of several hundred tLousanddollars. Ten times $25,000 per year would be none too large a sum tor the state to appropriate for the re- claimation of the swamp lands of northern Minnesota; money so invested would yield the state large returns and open to culti- vation thousands of acres of pri- vate lands, No man should be allowed to go to the legislature this winter from the northern part of the state who is not pledged to make drainage his foremost aim. Moreover it is necessary that the newspapers of northern Minnesota should at once begin a campaign for liberal approputiations and liberal laws for drainage which shall resound throughout the state without stopping until the legislature of 1905 adjourns. MINNESOTA’S democracy has but one hope—the nomination of | ¢ John Lind. Failing for the con- | sent of Mr. Lind they will prob-|jeq ably nominate Mr. Johnson next week, glad to head their ticket with a good man even though hopeless of victory. To the re- publicans the democratic choice is a matter of indifference. The ropublicans will this year make a vigorous campaign and they be- lieve that they will roll up the biggest republican majority in the history of the state. Should Jobn Lind be nominated it might be harder to do this—that is all. Neither John Lind or any other man stands within tens' of thou- sands of votes of winning against Robert C. Dunn.
