People vs. Politicians. It is the same old fight—the people against the politicians. The man who nominated Parker at St. Lounis made much of the fact that the nomination of Roose- velt was a cut and dried affair, a foregone conclasion long before the vote was taken while the democrats met in convention to boldly battle for their candidate. It sounded real pretty. But why was the nomination of “Roosevelt a foregone conclusion and why was there a battle at St. Louis? Because the people had decreed the nomination of the one while they abandoned the choice of the other to the fortunes of a politi- cal fight. Every man from the Atlantic to the Pacific knows that the people generally throughout the country cared nota rap who was nominated at St. Louis. Very different was it at Chicago. The people named the republican candidate for the presidency months in advance and all the power of the politicians, all the wealth of the money power of the cast could not muster a single vote in opposition to Theodore Roosevelt. The politicians have still a lot to do with the government of this country, but the people have taken over the business of nom- inating and electing their presi- dents. e 0000000000000 esssstesseoseeeesssoeeseseeeoess | ..CHOICE LOTS Grow More Valuable Every Day The demand for Building Lots in Bemidji contmues unabated. We still have a large number of Fine Residence Lots, however, in all parts of the city. g You could have bought cheaper a few months ago, but you will not be able to buy cheap a few monthsfrom now. Bemidji Townsite & Improvement Co. JOHN F. GIBBONS, Local Agent. Wholesale Liquor Dealer Agent for Anheuser-Busch Famous St. Louis Beer THE Business Men’s club did well to reject the proposition for a carnival involving a guarantee of §1,000 on the part of the city. There may be a difference of opinion as to the advisability of holding a carnival at this time, but there can be no doubt as to the unwisdom of the guarantee proposition. Tur Minnesota state immigra- tion association was formally or- ganized at St. Paul yesterday. It will take steps to advertise Min- nesota in a systematic manner and should be productive of much good. Temperance wave at 'Hibbing, Erskine votes to improve $3000 worth. “Parker is not a barker,” says the Fergus Falls Globe. The editorials of the Eveleth Star are of the first magnitude. Meclntosh advertisers crowd the Tribune hard for news space. Roseau congratulates itself that even in-political rows it is easily first. The Nielsville nine larrups the Shelly nine one larrup for each of nine innings. Hail stone stories begin to pelt the fish story for the annual championship belt. Somebody thought Walker people were green goods pro- position but they were not. It. seems it was the urpire and not the Big Duluth’s that ‘won that game from Fosston. Crookston is not content to ac: _|ceptithe 1900 fig: ulation : SSS tice, that Dunn and Bradstreet are.. “What's the matter with mov- ing the capital city to some guod county seat now? Say Dulufth,” suggest the Itasca News. If ‘Crookston spent as much energy raising the cash as it does quarreling over the site of its Carnegie library it could buy any site it wants. The St. Paul Globe is confident of democratic success in the! nation and in Minnesota too. The polite thing to call the Globe is an optimist. Conde Hamlin’s figures on Dunn’s preconvention strength were just about right as pub- lished in the Pioneer Press; he was just a bit too conservative, that’s all. Ifhe becomes chair- man of thestate central commit- tee you will know when he makes his estimate of Dunn’s majority that it’s so. ‘ Nat Campbell of Crookstonl while in this city yesterday de-| clared that the democratic candi- | date for congress in the ninth| district this year would come from Fergus Falls thus com- pletely freeziny out Mr. Rowe of | Crookston. * Mr. Campbell who! is noted for his roseate views of| the democratic situationalso pre- dicts that the democratic nom- inee will bury Halvor Steenérson fathoms deep.
