The passing of Senator Marcus A. Hanna at Washington yester- :«day removes from public life one .of the strongest and most force- tul of latter day Americans. ‘Outside the presidential chair few men have attracted wider public attention during the past ten years than did Senator Hanna. For that length of time he has been a conspicious figure in the politics of the country and the esteem in which he was held by the liberal and conservative public at large is best attested by the universal expressions of regret that attend the announce- ment of hisdeath. :successful and his unstinted zeal | g and the ability and energy which he brought to his every under- |8 taking made him a iman to be ad- mired and respected. He was a ‘business man of the broad- guaged, liberal type who stood :squarely for his friends and his sincerest convictions, a éterling character in public life, and it is to be regretted that he was not permitted to round out more years of usefulness. BeMIDJTS schoolsare a problem -at present and have been for the past five years. The school board has builded a number of additions to the city schools and cramped conditions are still reported. However, there is one good thing about it all. It demonstrates very conclusively the rapid growth of the city and removes it far and effectually from the list of towns that are known in the parlance of the thoroughfare as ‘“‘dead ones.” ~ THE Japanese naval officers | have orders to blow up their! ships before letting them fall | into the hands of the Russians. | It almond-eyed Oriental nation husé the sympathy of the ,f\morinnn3 people when sentiment like tl)isi prevails. THE Retail Grocers are in ses- | sion at Crookston, and the Com- mercial West, one of the bright- est trade publications of the state, is represented at the convention by W.E. Davis, a newspaper man known to his friends in the hdlcyon days of the Red River Valley as “Prunes,” Mr* is now successful with the Com- | Davis mercial West, and he worthy of Senator Hanna | ——> lived a useful life in the broadest | sense of the term. Mr. Mershon’s indisposition is quite serious and Dr. Henderson, who is attending him states that he will be unable to resume until lFriday night at least. There will be no performance tonight or to- morrow night but the engage- ment will be resumed Friday night, Mr. Mershon’s condition |permitting. There will be a Sat- urday afternoon matinee and the company’s engagement will con- clude Saturday night. The in- ability of the company to carry out its full engagement will be generally regretted.
