One of the most unfortunate things about a great political campaign is that the personality of the candidates and the political faction which they represent en- tirely overshadows the problems of state which would much more profitably occupy the attention of the people. Tn the campaign for governor of Minnesota now so well under way the words in every mouth are Dunn, Van Sant, Collins, Eddy, etc., while such really great matteis as the primary election law, the board of control system, revision of the state’s tax system, etc., are never mentioned or even thought of. Even the merger gels but little attention, except as laborious effortis made to show tlLat one candidate is for it and another is against it. The questions of the state named above. and numerous others of a similar nature are of far greater import than the selec- tion of a republican candidate for governor, and it is much to be regretted that we shall study them so little in the coming elec- Fortunately we shall prac- tice again on the primary elec- tion Taw and our second exper- ience will undoubtedly throw much light onthe different phases |1 of this question. The others will get no forum until we have put «7imen in office once more. TrE Pioneer want column has proved itself a most successful and convenient means of filling the various minor wants of this community. Scarce a day goes by thatits efficiency is not strik- _ingly demonstrated and those " whodo not use it are simply those who have not tried it WHETHER the move now under way to purify local conditions proves a success or not depends entirely upon: public sentiment. A city is no better than its people | want 1t to be. THERE is a rumor to the effect — that"J. Pierpont Morgan will re- .~ desvous of infamy tire and it will be well to get a firmer grip on your pocket book. IsBemidjiRotten to the \'ery Core? Editor Pioneer: — Following closely upon the disclosures of a -few—wecks-ago; that—the young boys of the city were the authors of the numecrous robberies of “Stores and dwellings in Bemidji comes the second sensa, tinn that maay of its young people for. a long time have maintained ren- in secluded places adjacent to town. be outdone by their older rivals, | the keepers of the more preten- _tious houses of prostitution, the boys have built several comfort- | able huts in near-by swamps and elsewhere to which they and young girls of the town resort. “~"Phat the town is honeycombed = | well described by some late tour- } | than it;is worth among those on { | but that they may be made both | whether it shall be so or not. Not to| through and through with im- morality is well known to its own people, but the more thought- ful ones had hoped that the evil was largely confined to its older classes. That the debauchery of its people is systematically and constantly carried on admits of no doubt and the time has come when those of our people who believe in the purity of man- hood and womanhood must say that harlots and their consorts, thugs and gamblers shall no longer rule Bemidji. The revolt- ing moral condition of the.city-is ists who declared it to be therot- tenest place they were ever in and who left in disgust after a four days’ ‘stay to finish 'their outing: in-aneighboring city and among a cleaner people, Bemld]l has passed for more the ottside. People are led to believe that homes here are both desirable and safe. It is not so, desirable and safe, the writer confidently believes. It Tests with our own citizens to say Thursday night gives an oppor- tunity at the city hall for every one to show the manhood that is in him. A stand will be made for decency of living.
